Hi, does anyone know where I can download a free chinese character typer onto my computer? It's a PC. It was removed last time when I had to format my computer and don't have an original copy. Thank you

I'm pretty sure Windows itself has a Global Chinese IME (Trad and Simp).

If your using win7 or vista; open control panel then under clock, language and region - click change keyboards and other input methods. It's self-explanatory from here on.

If XP, if I remember correctly in the region settings you can either change your region and everything else to chinese then it will install the IMEs or just download the Global IME and language packs from Microsoft's website (google).

Once you've done the above, you change the input methods for all window versions via the language bar on the taskbar and note you may need your windows CD.

I'm using Windows 7 and this doesn't work for me.
When I switch to Chinese(traditional, Hong Kong, S.A.R.), it just displays a keyword. I remember in the vista version, it will display a Chinese writing pad, but for Windows 7, it just display a keyboard. When I click on the keys, I'm just inserting the letter character on they key.

Hey 小小 thank you for your help but it doesn't work for me either. Only option is "United Kingdom" - won't let me change to anything else.

Oh, I don't think it does.. it's only for Cantonese pinyin. Sorry.
You can probably google up and probably come up with something - but I only understand/know canto ping yam.

for Win7 go to Control Panel ---> Clock, Language, Region---> Change Keyboards or other Input Methods---> Change Keyboards---> Add----> Chinese (Simplified, PRC) ----> Check Microsoft Pinyin New Experience Input Style---> Ok and basically ok all of those. Go to your language bar and select Chinese to use Chinese. If you want to use traditional instead of simplified just go to Options and in the Advanced tab under Character Set choose Traditional Chinese.

I followed the steps. I'm not sure what is a "language bar".

I chose the language: Chinese(traditional, Hong Kong, S.A.R.)

and I'm using the writing pad on "tablet pc input panel" for win7.
It seems like the language is unavailable.

picking hk or other options doesn't make that much difference. its just a matter of it showing traditional vs simplified chinese
and then the options of pinyin etc...

the language options are always available... just keep trying different settings

    I tired Chinese(traditional, Macao, S.A.R.) and Vietnamese
It's still shows the "unavailable" message.

So far, only English works for the writing pad.

It's not working becuz your all doing it wrong

For traditional another way is using the one from Taiwan I believe as it has a more vivid selection than the HK SAR one and Chinese Simp is PRC as KT said. In the Text services and Input Lang window (where you add the keyboards and IMEs) there should be a Language bar tab, you can choose for it to float on desktop or docked on taskbar which is usually the default.

@ J Lam post #13 - See the ZH and the keyboard pic on the top of the screenshot, that should be part of the language bar.

different o/s are slightly different, but once u get to the settings its pretty much the same
the older ones may require you to have the cd as it's not installed by default (unless u toggle the settings when u installed it). but even if u don't have the cd, getting that info pack isn't too hard =)

i only use the tw settings, as thats all i need hehe

I got my language bar to display. I chose the Traditional Taiwan on my language and on my "tablet pc input panel", but the language still isn't available.

It's telling me to "upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate". But it seems like I have to pay for it.:wiggle:
I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium.

Yes, you're right! It's not installed by default and I don't have the original windows cd
