Linsanity Is Over: Jeremy Lin Leaving New York Knicks For Houston Rockets
    By IBTimes Staff Reporter

Linsanity is no more. The New York Knicks have officially lost Jeremy Lin to the Houston Rockets, as a source reportedly tells ESPN's Stephen A. Smith that the Knicks do not plan to match Houston's offer sheet for the young star point guard. The Knicks are still deliberating about the decision, some team sources have said, but the high price of the third year of Lin's contract pretty much seals the deal, Smith's source said. The Knicks have two days to decide what to do about Lin. The news comes just four days after New York head coach Mike Woodson said Jeremy Lin would "absolutely" return to the Knicks as the team's starting point guard next season. It also comes just a few days after a Knicks source told ESPN that the team was willing to match Houston's offer sheet for up to "a billion dollars."

The Rockets offered Lin a three-year deal broken down as follows: $5 million in the first year, $5.225 million in the second and $14.8 million in the third, according to ESPN. And now the Knicks are reportedly going back on what they've been repeatedly saying about Lin, and are instead letting him go to Houston.

But it's not a total surprise, as the Knicks made some moves in the last couple of days that called into question their claim that they would be bringing Jeremy Lin back as starting floor general. First they picked up veteran point guard Jason Kidd, a 10-time All-Star who led the Dallas Mavericks to an NBA championship in 2011, but who at 39 years old is showing signs of his age. Then on Saturday, the Knicks signed point guard Raymond Felton and jettisoned Landry Fields in a major day of deals. The Knicks announced Saturday night that they had finalized and agreed to a sign-and-trade deal with the Portland Trail Blazers in which they give up forward Jared Jeffries and center Dan Gadzuric, while gaining point guard Raymond Felton and Kurt Thomas, NBA sources told ESPN.

The trade for Raymond Felton raised questions about what the Knicks planned to do with Jeremy Lin, who shot to superstardom as the guy behind "Linsanity," the craze that swept through New York last spring as he scored 20 points or more in nine out of 10 games during a record-breaking stretch before sustaining a season-ending injury. Felton played 54 games for New York during the 2010-11 season before being traded to the Denver Nuggets under the deal that brought Carmelo Anthony to the Knicks.

A source with ties to Jeremy Lin told ESPNNewYork.com that the acquisition of Felton by the Knicks surprised Lin. "He was very surprised," the source told the site. "He felt the whole time that the Knicks would just match the offer." So it is safe to assume that Jeremy Lin himself is surprised he'll be saying goodbye to Madison Square Garden. Seems like it's all just business for the Knicks.

I dont know...I think a lot of people like Lin because he's asian and is something new for the NBA, but I've seen his games, Lin is an ok PG, but still has a lot to learn, when he start learning how to pass more, defend better and lose less balls he might become actually someone. He needs to show everyone that it wasnt just some random viagra that he took that made him play well for a few games. I wish him the best in the Rockets.

Btw with Scola going to the Suns, what kind of team does the Rockets have now??

I think so as well. They are offering everything Orlando is looking for. Prospects, cap relief, and draft picks. They aren't getting all of that from the Lakers.

@Lin criticism above. He is not a "crappy PG." He is at least above average. Whether he is worth 15 mill in the 3rd year remains to be seen. But passing pick and roll PGs are a dying breed. It's sort of like the center position right now.

Also the Knicks are hilarious. They could possibly be the worst run sports franchise in all the major leagues. They've been the laughing stock of the NBA for the past decade and look like they plan to keep that streak going.

It's a good core. Not good enough to make the playoffs, but not bad enough to finish last in the west. The defense looks like it will be a major concern as is always with the Suns. How good this team does will be very dependent on Beasley and whether he still has some potential to live up to. I highly doubt it will happen, but he has the talent to be a consistent performer.

  10. all I know is.. dammnn bball players get paid!

  11. So whos the knicks going to get if not Jeremy lin? Felton/Fatton? he sucks! the knicks Need Jeremy Lin but the GM is makin it personal because Lin Schooled him on contract negotiations and it came to bite him in the ass.. He basically thought no one would sign Jeremy Lin for what the rockets offered and let him "test" the market when he should of just offered him a 4 year contract of 20 mill on the spot. Is it Lin's fault he let him go? Bottom line is the Rockets know how valuable Lin is and im sure the Knicks do too. If Dolan would get off his high horse instead of crying about Jeremy Lin schooling him... the only smart move is to sign Lin who has potential and is young and they can trade him in 2 years if he sucks... The knicks aren't going anywhere in 2 years either, their players are on max salary cap regardless so why does it not make sense to sign Lin? What the GM did was figure he'd spend the same amount of money Lin is worth on shittier players to say FU to Lin.. We all know Dolan is an idiot GM and a billionare with no basketball sense and he's proven to make bad decisions and its no suprise he keeps bleeping up... Felton is way past his prime and only had 1 good season under Dantoni... Knicks are a mess right now and it's likely that Lin's leaving but i wouldn't be surprised that he'd come to his senses and sign Lin after he blows his load on the wall or something. If not he's a tool like all the other bad trades he did.

really? they're getting thomas, camby, kidd and felton......really?

  13. a 39 year old and a scrub who's out of shape and won't have any future really? if they wanted a win now team they shouldn't have picked 2 players past their prime and a fat scrub who will barely make it through training camp. Thomas/Camby don't have anything to do with Lin because they have no Jefferies/Fields..

Here's the take from one writer in the New York Times:

    July 18, 2012
Knicks Drew the Line at Lin?

    By LYNN ZINSER

Let's make sure we have this straight: the Knicks have spent all of their recent history overpaying everybody they could manage to throw money at, are usually paying heaven knows how many coaches at any given time, would still be backing an armored truck to the doors of people like Eddy Curry and Larry Brown and Isiah Thomas had circumstances not intervened, sent half the franchise elsewhere so Carmelo Anthony could drive their fans batty, have obliterated the idea that all of this money should go toward constructing a team that might actually win more than one playoff game and they keep increasing ticket prices to pay for the renovated playground of Madison Square Garden. And this is the team that makes a statement for fiscal responsibility by throwing a snit and letting its one genuine fan sensation walk out the door for nothing in return? They drop the ax on Linsanity, the one thing that made everybody happy and suddenly excited to go to the Garden? The Knicks — the Knicks — decide to make their principled financial stand on Jeremy Lin? Really?

    Wow.

It's hard to believe after all these grim years that a terrible Knicks decision has any surprise factor at all, but this one defies even Jim Dolan-as-total-nitwit logic. Lin fell through their ceiling like a gift from basketball heaven, a genuine out-of-nowhere star whom fans adored. Even the Knicks couldn't botch this one, could they? Let him walk because two years from now they might be overpaying the one player who makes people jazzed about being Knicks fans?

    Wow.

Dolan might as well have traveled to Knicks fans' houses and doused all of them with fire hoses. Talk all you want about how everyone will now move on, à la Mike Lupica of The Daily News, or how this is really Anthony's team anyway, per Mike Vaccaro of The New York Post, or how we really don't know if Lin would have played up to his contract, as Ken Berger writes on CBSSports.com. Plenty of people have lauded the Knicks for avoiding that costly third year of Lin's deal, which is sort of like praising the Cookie Monster for stopping after his 85th Oreo. Hey, Dolan just saved a lot of people the trouble of watching Knicks games. That's worth something, right? Honey, what's on HGTV tonight?

But like many, Ian O'Connor of ESPN.com is aghast that the Knicks chose to get persnickety about money now and Gregg Doyel of CBSSports.com calls this the most Dolan move ever. Will Leitch writes in New York magazine that the Knicks clearly never got Linsanity, and never deserved it. And now it's over. Houston, as Randy Harvey writes in The Houston Chronicle, doesn't even know exactly what it's getting. And even if Lin does all the things that gave Knicks fans goose bumps, he'll be doing it for a rebuilding team that, unless it miraculously lands Dwight Howard, everyone outside the arena ZIP code will forget is even in the league. Linsanity, it turns out, burned brightly like a comet and then passed out of view. And Dolan is feeling richer. Isn't that swell? If all that made it hard for you to sleep, you could find yourself rolling out of bed at 4:30 a.m. and flipping on the British Open Thursday morning. Much of the first round will be dedicated to figuring out which Tiger Woods has showed up at Royal Lytham, because even he has gotten a bit dizzy trying to explain his up-and-down year, writes Mike Walker on Golf.com. Robert Lusetich of Foxsports.com believes Woods's problem is his own anxiety about adding to his major victories. There is also the usual anxiety among the English about whether Lee Westwood will ever win anything of consequence. Or you can ponder, along with ESPN.com's Rick Reilly, whether Rory McIlroy's love life has K.O.'ed his golf game. Whatever happens, the British golf gurus would like the players to do it all a bit faster because rounds are starting to feel like extended tax audits. Of course, even the dullest golf round is more entertaining than contemplating the N.F.L.'s off-season arrest docket, which has gotten ludicrously long. The Cowboys' Dez Bryant became the latest when his mother claimed he threatened to kill her. We do know that Bryant cannot claim Linsanity as a defense. Because thanks to the Knicks, that is history.

Good discussion on Hadouken's link. Seriously though, all this talk reminds me of another sports star years ago and what he had to go through; I wonder how many people remember this guy?
