As the tensions intensify between China and Japan’s dispute over the Diaoyu Islands, many Chinese artists have expressed their support for China.

Earlier, Li Bingbing (李冰冰) refused to attend the premier of Resident Evil: Retribution in Tokyo, citing her stance over the disputed islands in the East China Sea. Simon Yam (任達華) also indicated that he would not act in any Japanese films and will boycott Japanese products until the dispute is resolved. After a backlash for filming Japanese movie 1905, Tony Leung (梁朝伟) will also put filming on hold indefinitely.

Yesterday, China Radio and Television Association (CRTA) released a public statement to support China in the territorial disputes. CRTA Chairman, Tang Guoqiang (唐國強) led 255 artists including Li Bingbing, Faye Wong (王菲), William Feng (馮紹峰), Jay Chou (周杰倫), Chow Yun Fat (周潤發), Raymond Lam (林峰) and Donnie Yen (甄子丹) to pledge their support for the Chinese government in the sovereignty claims of the Diaoyu Islands.

An Excerpt of the CRTA Statement

The Japanese government announced the purchase of the Diaoyu Islands without considering China’s strong objections and negotiating further with China. Japan’s insistence to nationalize the Diaoyu Islands is a serious violation of territory sovereignty, a breach of international conventions and a provocation towards China. This will damage the Sino-Japanese ties and affect the world peace development. In response to this, China Radio and Television Association’s members expressed strong indignation and severe reprimand.

The Diaoyu Islands belong to the Chinese territory since the ancient times. The Chinese made early discovery on the islands; named them and used them. Therefore, China has irrefutable history and legal basis. The Japanese government is out to destroy our thoughts, alienate away from the facts, purchasing and nationalize the Diaoyu Islands at the expense of damaging Sino-Japanese ties. The unilateral action is illegal and invalid and will not shake China’s divine sovereignty over Diaoyu Islands.

    List of Chinese artists

The 255 CRTA members who issued the public statement include a mixture of artists from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan in the film, television and singing industry. Some of the list of artists is as follows:

China Artists: Li Bingbing, Faye Wong, William Feng, Fang Bingbing (范冰冰), Hu Jun(胡軍), Gao Yuanyuan (高圓圓), Huang Xiaoming (黃曉明), Li Chen (李晨), Ma Su(馬蘇)

Hong Kong Artists: Louis Koo (古天樂), Ray Lui (呂良偉), Shawn Yue (余文樂), Coco Lee (李玟), Chow Yun fat, Raymond Lam(林峰), Gallen Lo (羅嘉良), Ekin Cheng(鄭伊健), Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), Eric Tsang(曾志偉), Donnie Yen

Taiwan Artists: Jay Chou, Ken Chu (朱孝天), Alec Su (蘇有朋), Emil Chau(周華健), Vic Chou(周渝民), Chiling Lin(林志玲)

If China has any basis for the claim, it does not require the support of the artists. What do you expect them to say if their livelihood is dependent on China's goodwill. The alternate is getting blacklisted.

Why doesn't China go to the UN to have this sorted out? Currently it is behaving like a big bully.

cuz the UN is staying out of this, same with the US. China is the US major trading partner, and so is Japan, for economic and politic reasons. Not to mention SKorea and Taiwan also want dibs in this. I mean what can you say, you can't play mahjong without 4 players...

let them duke it out, these island disputes aren't going anywhere mainly because of oil deposits...

Personally, from what I remember, islands used to belong to the Chinese which they then surrendered to Japan. After WW2 US claimed all of Japan's territories including the DiaoYu (Senkaku) Islands and then returned all of them in the 70s. Therefore, I believe the islands should be awarded to Japan

Procedurally both competing parties need to agree to arbitration by the UN. The UN cannot intervene unless it is asked to do so.

The problem with this type of disputes is both parties have some basis for the claim. In the case of China it is basing on some form of historical evidence - probably during the Ming Dynasty. Unfortunately that Dynasty doesn't exist anymore as the last time I checked it is called the PRC. Territorial claims solely based on history is a tricky proposition. The sensible way forward is to downplay the issue, maintain the status quo and continue to negotiate. Japan is no pushover unlike the Philippines.

are you serious? why can't China have the island back they lost in a war around 1895? the US gave it to the Japanese after WW2, but that doesn't mean they're the rightful owners.

it is not based on claims of the Ming Dynasty, the islands were ceded to Japan in 1895 (late Qing Dynasty). how could China, back then the Qing Empire, cede an island to Japan that didn't belong to China (Qing) in the first place?

In the San Francisco Peace Treaty (post WW2) Japan renounced the rights over various territories derived from the 1895 Treaty of Shimonoseki. Unfortunately the San Francisco Treaty left the Bonin Islands and the Ryukyu Islands under a potential U.S. trusteeship. Neither the ROC nor the PRC were invited to participate at that time because of the Chinese Civil War and consequently there was no proper representation towards the content of the eventual treaty.

In 1972, the United States reverted the Ryūkyūs along with the ceding of control over the nearby (uninhabited) Senkaku Islands to Japan. Both the PRC and ROC arque at that time that this reversion did not determine the ultimate sovereignty of the Senkaku Islands.

In essence, China does have a basis for its claims based on more modern historical developments.

Why don't they just ask the Japanese where the "Diaoyu Islands" are situated and ask them to repeat it loudly... "China Sea, China Sea..."!

If any one has even read the history it's obvious who the Diaoyu Islands belongs to and in modern maps... it's still in the China seas! If that's not obvious enough... I don't know what is.

Didn't Japan try to claim "Taiwan" at one time!?! That saids it all really! Only because you've taken an island during a war doesn't make it yours! If they could deny things like rape, tourture, etc... they can also deny the Diaoyu Islands.

Japan said they bought it of a businessman...! But who did the Japanese businessman got the islands from... from the family tree...? And who did they get the the islands from and how...!?

Even though it's obvious that Japan forced their way through of getting the islands... this should not be a fight between Chinese and Japanese people... as it's to do with the Japanese government and not the Japanese citizens!

Chinese citizens and people around the world should not be against the citizens of Japan - but only the Japanese government, as it's their problem not the citizens!

Protesting against the islands is freespeech and will... but what's not ok is that Chinese people breaking into Japanese factories and breaking cars, shops, etc. That is not right. If you want to protest, then protest... and be civil about it! That's what gives Chinese people a bad name... corrupt, bully and what have you!

The truth is Japan has ignored what China has said and went through "purchasing" the islands. The reason for this is to get China in the situation that it's in now and let the whole world see that China is only about protests and cannot keep a level head and stay calm... and tell the world that China is a dangerous place to be in. They want China to announce a "war" and tell the world that China is dangerous. Japan is looking for an excuse to fight China... and USA is waiting for Japan for the call for help... even though the US said they are not involved, but we all know that isn't true! More than 60% of the US navi is now facing China with their guns aimed at China... this was recently announced on the news. And if this isn't part of the plan... I wonder why they're doing that!

All in all, this is between the Chinese and Japanese goevrnment... and not the people. Chinese and Japanese people can get along, but the governments just messes it up for the rest of them!

    Make hay not war!
