you can always hold a napkin over the flash area, that way there will be some light shinning on the object but not over exposed the bendable tripod would be the gorillapod you are referring to? i find it expensive compared to an actual stationary tripods
Actually I didn't say Slow Synchro is bad. I don't have much problem with the lighting. It looks good when you want to use flash and you want everything around to be nice and bright. I think most camera have slow synchro in the manual mode. (my old camera has this) The color of the flash turns out to be a little yellow. If you use auto flash, the flash is white, but only the subject is bright and the background is dark. nvm, I don't want a tripod.
I thought I'd bump this thread instead of making a new one. Any thoughts on the Nikon D5100/5200? I'm a casual photographer who's interested in getting more serious about photography. Many friends and family use Nikon, which we could share/borrow lenses if needed. In fact after handling them, I particularly like the placement and ergonomics of the Nikons. So now I'm just looking for opinions/thoughts/impressions on the D5100/5200 lol
If price isn't a issue when comparing D5100 to D5200, I would say D5200 due to the upgrades it received. Though I'm thinking if it's really worth a 200+ dollar upgrade. 39 point vs 11 point 480% increase in color metering sensitivity 5fps vs 4fps 24.1 MP vs 16 MP Aside from the two first points, is an extra fps and an extra 8 MP really worth 200+ dollars? I'm sure that could be put into a lens instead.
Well, the focusing points would be useful depending on how bunch up or far the points are. I'm not too sure about the color metering. Slight increase of fps is not worth it, so is the MP. The only thing I would say it's worth is the new processing chip, 39 points, and the color metering. $200 could get you a 35mm f1.8 lens: http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-35mm-1-8G-Digital-Cameras/dp/B001S2PPT0 If you think about doing video recording also, then you might consider the D5200 with new options on it.

Thanks RTH, that was actually a very good video review. I think that actually got me sold on the D5100. It seems the only factor that's appealing to me from the D5200 over the D5100 is the extra focus points, but I've gotten used to much less than 11, so 11 is actually an upgrade already lol. As for the extra tidbits like 8MP extra, features related to video capture, meh, I won't be using/needing them in the near future I'm sure. The D5100 seems to have a higher number of shots per charge than the D5200, which is a plus. In all honesty, I would probably have gone for the D3200, but the one thing I really want is the swivel screen lol. Thanks for the help.
shots per charge, how many shots you plan to do in a day? and for batteries, you can always buy those cheap battery from DX...and swap when you need i just upgraded my Canon XSi to Canon 5D Mark III ( 9 AF vs 61 AF ) lol

I'm assuming the 5DM3 cost ~$3,000 for the body alone. Just curious, how much is the D5100 and D5200 in Canada? Refurbished D5100 (90 day warranty on refurbished) in the US is like $490 (was $429 a few days ago) w/ 18-55 kit lens. D5200 is new so mostly retail price at this moment.

Not too bad. The one from Costco don't come with 2 lens? In the states, Costco DSLR combos usually come with 2 lens, 18-55mm + a zoom lens (55-200mm or 70-300mm for Nikon). Any specific lens you're looking for or will kit lens do for now? Most people recommend the 35mm f1.8 lens for Nikon DX lens

I've got a few friends with Nikons (D3200/D5100 and other series), I'll borrow it off of them for now. In fact, I wonder if I can use my dad's old lenses. He owns an old Nikon FG which uses AI lenses. The current consumer series of Nikons (i.e. the D5100) can support AI lenses, though it requires setting the exposure manually. Tempting.

Use different lens and see which one might be worth investing with your own money. I'm not sure about old lens, never used or owned one.
Luckily, I might not have to fork that much more on lenses, only if I'm looking for a particular one. It turns out, F-mount lenses will work fine with DX bodies in M. And my dad's got quite a few quality F lenses that he's no longer using. i used to check photoprice.ca but canon didn't allow price postings recently, but there is canonpricewatch.com (for usa) ... nikonpricewatch.com exist as well was about to get the body from Broadway Camera for $3149 + taxes, w/ 24-105mm lens is $3699 + taxes... then i waited until the PST comes back, i got body from Camera Canada at $3079 + GST only + free ship, $3233 total d5100 (429-body) and d5200 (659-body) nikon's warranty in USA is only 1 year, Canada is 2-year on body and 5-year on lens when you get low end stuff, you expect there will be a replacement every year...look like XSi, T1i, T2i, T3i, T4i, T5i now...lol when you get to higher end stuff, the 5D3 will probably get replaced 3 yrs later, 1DX in 4-6 years later
Pretty much. Every year there's a new model with some improvements. I really want to upgrade my NEX-5N to NEX-5R just for the wifi feature and "slightly" improved focusing but not worth the money to do so. Low end DSLR should last at least 2 to 3 years before you actually want to upgrade if the new features are appealing.
