Wow that is brutal. Shouldn't there be an emergency stop button next to the elevator? I'm sure that would've helped. But the fact that there were two ladies guarding the escalator raises an eyebrow. Was it not supposed to be in operation? Shouldn't leave the testing to the public.

Reminds me of another video that happened in China. I think the parent left the kid wandering around in a mall, then the kid decides to be superman on the escalator railings but lost his grip and fell.

Here's the vid (watch at own discretion):

In kdotc video, the mother saves the child. In my video, the parenting kills the child.

Video 1) Omg~ the flooring literally just opened up~ Escalator safety !??

Video 2) omg x unbelieveable~ why did no one come to help straightaway? They were just standing by hesitantly ~ and the video~ was literally replay replaying the scene ~ there should have been a response officer to attend the scene~ poor baby~ =(

With all the insurance scams in China, I'm not surprised no one helped. Apparently a lot of people in China would help others, but then get sued for "making the situation worse" or "it was the helper's fault for their injury".

It should be natural for human's to help others, but the insurance scam just changes the way people think. You will have to like take a video of yourself proving you're innocent with the scene AND making sure they want your help (if they're conscious), before you help them.

Vid 1 - The two bystanders raises suspicion because the moment they moved out of the way, the tiles collapsed. I also agree that there should be an emergency button nearby and pressing it within a timely manner could have changed the outcome. I am guessing the mother's leg was crushed and pulled downwards by the gear because why else would she let go?

Vid 2 - How is that still on YouTube! That is shocking and Jeff I agree and it's a shame.

What's worse is that a few days after this news, people were taking the piss with 'how to take escalator' videos where they do poses on the hand rails to avoid the steps. It's very distasteful.

First Video, at that time, the mom's instinct kicked in but was unable to save herself. Did the mother fall through the escalator or got caught in it and crushed? So tragic, I don't know if those two ladies could had help, stopping the escalator should be the first thing that came to mind cause all escalators have that stop button. I think they were just shocked, scared and confused and not know what to do.

Second Video, is just more stupid parents not watch these very young kids. See it all the time in RL and on TV. Keep your eyes on your kids at all times.

The thing that I find horrific about the whole incident is that escalator designers have failed to provide a fail safe device against this. IMHO, accidents (from human error failure) like this are definitely preventable as an engineering exercise. There could be features incorporated that make it mechanically mandatory to properly close and lock the panels before the escalator can function. It's a real tragedy that something like this has to happen before it nudges mechanical engineers within the escalator industry to think outside their usual box <smh>

Man, these vidz are hard to watch!! I don't trust China standard/policy with a 10 ft. pole. Fake baby formula, eggs, etc. If it happens in the states, all hell will break loose. Litigation anyone?

Well, it didn't actually show anything bloody or gross, just her disappearing into a hole at the top of the escalator. Still, a tragedy that could have easily been avoided had the people who were responsible done their jobs the way they were supposed to. I hope they get jail time for this.
