Just before midnight a huge explosion rocked Tianjin, China. Caused by shipment in a warehouse storing dangerous chemicals goods. 17 are confirmed dead with over 400 injured. Anyone rmb when Suncor blew in Toronto at Keele and Wilson? IBT News
Apparently, the Chinese government is putting on lid on this disaster, preventing reporters full access to the story https://www.hongkongfp.com/2015/08/...edia-struggle-to-report-on-tianjin-explosion/ But, I'm sure that the CIA and other intelligence agencies around the world, are using uploaded footage to gauge the extent of the explosion by using elapsed time versus sound report to get a real sense of how powerful this was. By my eyeball guess, many of the videos were taken from miles away of an ongoing fire with a small initial explosion, which then likely triggered a much larger secondary explosion. This was a major disaster and I can see why the Chinese would want to prevent too much coverage.
Yeah, limiting the media coverage on the issue currently... But damn, this is a big explosion and so far from what I read, 17 dead so far...
I think the count's a lot more than that now and likely to go up further; but I think that they were lucky it happened at night, presumably when there were less people there. From the size of those blasts, I was expecting a toll of thousands just from the explosions had it been in a populated area. There may be other issues involved, ie. toxic contaminants, vapors; it's no wonder that the PRC is tight lipped about this. In fact, the event was measured by USGS equipment in Beijing between a magnitude 2.0 to 3.0 Richter. There were two smaller explosions that was then followed by a huge one. Given the politics in the PRC, something like this is rather publicly damaging to the governments reputation, vis a vis safety record. I wouldn't put it past them to falsely place blame on Uighur or Tibetan "terrorists" and then use the event to galvanize national opinion to allow further repression in China's western regions. From past practice, we have to remember that everything in China has a political side. Source: http://www.theguardian.com/world/20...sion-earthquake-recording-instruments-beijing
ralphrepo Yeah I read somewhere it's actually a petroleum explosion. It's hard to say. Plus it is too dam dangerous for people to go in anyways.
Dang saw this on yahoo, wonder what they were building or doing in that building.... Death toll up to 50 now, not a surprise. http://news.yahoo.com/least-44-dead-huge-warehouse-blasts-hit-chinese-054952235.html
death toll is probably increasing as more info will be announced by the government or something.. source: http://www.cnn.com/2015/08/13/asia/china-tianjin-explosions/
I saw it for a sec on the news, they clearly didn't want this to be leaked to the media, but it's just too huge to stop people from posting it on social media. After seeing some clips and pics, it's a lot worst than I first thought.
crasianlee Holy shit, that video is insane. It's crazy how they keep these dangerous chemical goods so close to the city.. Source There is no safe spot..
That's a lot, seen those clip over again, it's crazy to think only so few died as far as we know now. But the damage is huge.
So few confirmed died. I will have to say at least 100 are dead. RIP. Gotta question the urban planners to have this dangerous site so close to the city.
Agreed, they probably didn't care as long as they were making $$$ and that's all they care about right now. I'm sure it's got to be in the hundreds though that died....and like some of the comments are saying, probably can't tell because of the fire most likely wiped out the existence of them.
The bolded part is the scary part. I didn't even think about that. There was no way you can hide this from the media.
Nope, no matter how much China will try to "CGI" this event like they did with the opening Beijing Olympics...
There have been quite a few large scale disaster in China, these are mostly preventable but the safety regulations are weak and not much enforcement are implemented. Corruption...heads will roll now, every time the gov't waits till something big happens than they start moving their fat asses. Wonder who's going to be the escape goat this time.
KAPOW! It really makes you wonder, WHAT is the real reason for the explosion and why it was so violent. The is conspiracy floating around, and it's defn something Chinese government doesn't want people to know.
