Hong Kong's newest dieting craze: Staring at the sun so you won't have to eat

Recently, a group of young women in Hong Kong have been spotted staring into the sun for long periods of time in a bizarre attempt to lose weight.

Women in their twenties have been arriving at Sam Ka Village beach in Hong Kong in the early morning and then again during the afternoon. According to observers, they take off their shoes, put on sunglasses, set an alarm on their phone and then simply begin staring right into the sun.

According to report last month from Oriental Daily, the women believe that by looking into the sun they can lose weight by absorbing solar energy and substituting that for the actual calories they need to stay alive usually obtained by eating food. By staring into the sun for long enough, they believe, they will lose the need to eat.

"We practice sun-gazing as a substitute for eating," one dieter told reporters. "Some of us who have already finished sun therapy now eat less than before, and others don't even have to eat at all!"

It turns out the practice of sun-gazing isn't new, some say its history as an ancient therapy traces back thousands of years. According to The Independent, in the early 20th century the practice was popularized again by William Horatio Bates as a form of alternative therapy. However, the theory that looking at the sun can save you from the trouble of having to eat food is a new notion.

According to a 2011 documentary called "Eat The Sun," beginner sun-gazers must stare at the sun for 10 seconds. After that they must increase that by 10 seconds each day until after nine months they are staring at the sun for 44 minutes each day.

Doctors warn that this is a really bad idea.

Weight loss can be obtaining through simple dieting, exercising and acupuncture, or if all else fails, throughparasitic weight loss worms bought for cheap on Taobao.

Omg they found the solution to world hunger!

If they spent all that time getting to the beach and starring at the sun in exercising instead, they would have lost their desired weight already.

that is horrible advice from shanghaiist lol

HK people and their obsession with weight loss, this is just stupid, looking at the sun can cause blindness even if they have sunglasses on, it's still not good for the eyes.

This is ridiculous, the sun is probably evaporating all the water inside their body making them 'lose weight' - mummify them

This is like the 'sun' version of the Faculty ~ aliens are among us

    Amah Rock

The Amah Rock is actually the landmark of Sha Tin. It is located on a small hill of Lion Rock. There is a sad story behind the rock. The shapes of the rock looks like a mother carrying two children. The story is about a family with two kids. On the developing stage of Hong Kong, people are very poor, because of this, the father has to go abroad to making living, but there is not any news about the father. Although the mother is still living very poorly, she still hopes that one day her husband will come back. Therefore, the mother bring both of her children to the hill and look at the sea everyday. One day, three of them climb the hill as usual, but suddenly thunderstorm kicks in. All of them disappeared, only a rock left on the hill. This is whole story about Amah Rock.
