26 Feb – 17-year-old Chong Ting Yan became the first female teen singer from Hong Kong to be joining a K-pop group. As reported on Mingpao News, Chong, who uses a new stage name, Elkie, joins Cube Entertainment's new girl group CLC, which made its debut with five members in March last year. Elkie, who is fluent in three languages including English and Korean, is said to be the new addition to the group, aside from another Korean member Eunbin, making CLC a seven-member group. Although it will be her first debut in Korea, Elkie has appeared in several TVB dramas as a child star, including, "Come On, Cousin!", "The Hippocratic Crush II", and "Sniper Standoff". Netizens were surprised to find the differences in her appearance as one of the members of CLC and her previous appearances on television, sparking rumours of cosmetic surgery. Source: Yahoo News
Like the article said, you probably recognize her from On Call 2, playing the role as Yannis. Here's more of her in the group: On Call 2 was 3 years ago. but I'll be honest with y'all that I didn't even recognize her Too bad she signed with a bad management with Cube. shinobi
Those 3 TVB series aren't that old and she looks so young in that picture from TVB series and nothing like her in the recent photo. Do we mature and change that quickly?
wow, I remember her. Especially her role in HC2. Hard to find a 17 year old fluent in 3 languages...wish her the best
If she's 17 now, that makes her 14 or even 13 during On Call when it was aired (not sure when they actually filmed). So unless puberty hit her hard or it's the Korean makeup, people are suspecting PS too. I mean she has to be at least somewhat fluent in Korean to debut in a Korean group right? I found that usually asians not from Korea that debut in Korea usually knows at least 3 languages with English, Korea, and their hometown language. She wasn't bad in HC2. Could definitely land some acting roles in Korea since she already has experience under her belt, also would nice for her to return to HK too. CLC could be a good international group IF they ever gain traction since they have a HK member and a Thailand member, and usually foreigners have the most fans overseas.
I kinda like CLC before, so I'm going to keep an eye out for them more now. We'll get a better look at her later on.
LOL @ overreaction. fluent? nah.. BOA over stated. sad just sad to see these achieve the false imagery.
My eyes are a couple of other new groups...she wasn't even on my radar.. still interesting story, wonder how she made it, from TVB to Kpop...I'm more interested in that whole story.
I'm rarely into female rookie groups unless 1) They're from a known company or 2)They have a unique sound. Red Velvet, Twice, CLC fits into category #1. While The Ark and GFRIEND fits into 2. I wouldn't be surprised if she went back to TVB for solo promotions though, for interview or acting gigs (similar to how Lay is always in China). She has the whole HK nation behind her back right now.
after watching that video, you can pretty much still tell that is her. It's not like there's a dramatic change. I mean it's been 3 years and she's now 17 vs 14 when she was still in TVB. I personally don't think she did plastic surgery...at least not yet.
Hope the best for her since kpop songs are more listened around the world than cantonese song. Maybe she can "advertise" cantonese culture.
