Is it good to leave the computer on 24/7?

Discussion in 'Science, Technology & Car Chat' started by hkm91450, Jul 6, 2006.

  1. my pcs been on 24/7 almost 2 years straight and theres no problem, oh wait i had to change my powersupply because the fan to it stopped running and it started to smell like burnt rubber luckily i was around and noticed it ;) People with loud humming , probably dust so clean it or faulty hardware or loud fan. On average it costs $35 a year to leave ur pc on 24/7. I also read somewhere it costs less to leave it on all all day then turn it on and off because more power is required when u use that extra jolt to boot it up.

So 365 divded by 35 = 10.4 cents a day to leave your computer running 24/7

I've always read that it's better to leave the computers on, rather than turning them off and on. The less shock you can have to part is better. Power on and off could ruin Power supplies. I've seen instances on machines where you aren't able to turn things back on. Particularly Monitors. Like others have said good parts will usually solve this problem.

wow, thats pretty cheap. I would leave my machine on 24/7

if the power supply didn't sound like a car engine. I hate stock

power supplies, they are usually loud unless they are the 300

watts or under ones, but its hard to run a good machine with

that much power. when i get enough extra $$, im going to buy

a Seasonic PSU, I read some reviews about how quiet they are.

For those that are interested in how much electricity are used, you should get this. It measures how much electricity is used. My computer is turned on 12+ hours each day on average but I turn it off when I down need to use it. There is really no need to keep it on when you are not using it.

from recent statistics i've heard it costs about $68 to run your computer year round. As for heat yes computers do add to room heat. Build your own computer for quietness and use only certified low noise parts to keep everythign quiet. Or watercool it =). Quiet Powersupplies include SEASONIC, ZALMANS, THERMALTAKE MODELS, don't skimp on power supplies. They're IMPORTANT.

I think there was a rule about surge that reduce the life of electronic parts, therefore turning computer on and off will reduce the life of your components (like a surge for around 7 hours), so away from electric bill, depending on how oven you use your computer will determine whether to leave it on or turning it off. But nowadays, the computer is outdated faster than being burn out, so probably don't matter.

depends what u were doing, if u were editing videos and then left it, yes it might slow down over time. if you're checking email and surfing the web then no not really.

oh this doesn't apply if u have less then 256MB or even 512 MB of ram. =p

IMO, if you're running Windows, leaving it 24/7 = not a good idea.
Memory is the man problem here.

The processes running in the background just sucks up memory like crazy.
    Especially P2P via Java apps.

Besides....during summer, if you leave your PC on 24/7, your AC bill is going to go up! A PC generates a lot of heat! Of course, during winter I like to leave it on. Keeps the room a little warm!

So if you've got money to burn, leave it on! If it's slow, just reboot it. If it's cold, leave it on. If it's hot, don't leave it on.

    That's the method I follow.

hmm.. desktops are fine.. but i dun think its wise to leave laptops on 24/7. the fan is not powerful enough.

N I run on mac.. so i just let it sleep when not in use.. suppose to be better than offing n oning frequently

  20. yea if you want it to explode on you...

leaving the comp on 24/7 can't ever be good... for one.. it collects hella dust..

but ever since bt... you really have no choice... plus lotta the comps are built for it... :p
