  1. I want to learn how to speak Cantonese because I love Hong Kong and TVB series . All my favorite actors & actresses are from TVB . So I really want to learn Cantonese so I can understand what they are talking and discussing about , and also I can watch TVB series in Cantonese in the future . Hope you guys will help me . I want to learn how to speak only , not write & read Cantonese . Like if I want to watch a TVB serie in Cantonese , I will able to understand what the serie is about . That's my point of learning Cantonese . I know that writing Chinese letters is very hard . So I don't think I have too much free times for it ... Hi Hi Hi ... Am I right that the majority of people lives in Hong Kong speaking Cantonese ? That's the language that I want to learn some day in the future . So if you know some websites that I can learn Cantonese from basic to advance level , please help me OK , I would appreciate it very much . Waiting for the responses from you guys . Thanks a lot in advance . Have a great day !!!

I'm a little confused... you want to learn cantonese because you love the TVB series and want to understand what they are talking about? So how do you understand the TVB programmes now?!?!!

If you want to learn cantonese, either go to chinese sunday school (cantonese style) or live with a cantonese speaking family. You'll learn it soon enough.

  7. Yeah ! I want to learn Cantonese because I want to understand what they are talking about whenever I watch TVB series or shows , something like that . I'm not Chinese , and I'm Vietnamese . I just love Hong Kong , TVB series , stars & music . Those are the reason why I want to learn Cantonese . I started watching TVB series when I was 5 years old , and all the series I've watched are in Vietnamese Dubbed . That's why I can understand what they are talking about in the serie . But now , I want to be able to understand Cantonese by myself , because I want to visit Hong Kong in the future , and also want to meet my favorite TVB actors and actresses ... Hi Hi Hi ... I'm currently lives in USA , but in my school I only know one Chinese friend , he's from Shanghai . Unfortunately he cannot speak Cantonese , he's speak Mandarin only and little bit English cus he just recently came to USA . How disappointed ! Anyway you guys don't know any website that I can learn Cantonese online ? If you know know something or some way that I can learn Cantonese , please help me OK . I just want to learn how to speak & understand Cantonese only , I don't want to learn how to write , cus I know Chinese letters is very hard to write . Thank you everyone for visiting my topic and help me out . Have a wonderful day !!!

    Right. That explains things.

OK, since you're so enthusiastic, I'll start you off... MOE MUN TIE (No Problem!) Repeat it ten times a day and get back to me next week for lesson two! LOL

I'm sure the other PA members will put in their tution homework for you as well

Seriously though, if you google the net, you'll find loads of sites that'll offer cantonese lessons, e.g.

    http://www.mylanguageexchange.com/Learn/Cantonese.asp

I personally don't know what it's like as I and all my cantonese friends learnt it the traditional way, but I'm sure it's worth a try!

  9. Oh my god ! Thank you so much for the response Chariot . I felt so happy that you accept to teach me Cantonese . I'll try my best to learn it . So , I can call you "Teacher" now right ? Well , I know how to say "Hello , Thank You , Happy Birthday & I Love You" in Cantonese . I just don't know how to write it . Today, I know one new word , that's a very good start though ... Hi Hi Hi ... ( Moe Mun Tie = No Problem ) . I can pronounce it , but I'm not sure the way I pronounce it correct or not . Anyway , please teach me the basic stuffs first , and remember to give me new word every day OK . Thanks a lot again . Have a great day !!!

it's hard learning how to speak cantonese from reading stuff... i would rather hang out with ppl who speak cantonese... that way you'll learn it more easily.

A good way to learn is to start off watching canton movies with english subbs, watch the movie a few times, and keep your eyes open for phrases used often. repeat the phrases and make a mental note when you see them use the phrase.

If we weren't lazy maybe the PA community should try to subb some TVB series(s) (what's the pural form of series? serieses?? lol) i know can sort of understand japanese from the amount of anime i watch and tib bits of korean

yeh this is obviously the best way, but for those who dont have canto friends, reading the best way to start, although its hard to get the right tones from reading

Chinese school is useless. Been there, done that for 10+years. Pointless. I learned more on my own in 2 years than the 10+ years combined.

Best way to learn is by being immersed in a Chinese-speaking environment and constantly speaking it with others.
