i was wondering if anyone here has some good suggestions to other programs that i can use to be able to type in chinese for free.

i heard something about windows xp has something similar installed in the control panel (???) but i'm not too sure.

    go to
    control panel
    > regional settings
    >> advanced
    >>> install all the east asian langauge settings and go through advanced and check all the chinese languages you see. all the different encodings.
    then go to regional settings
    >> input method, langauge bar settings
    >> install the chinese input methods.

then make the langauge bar show up on the desktop and you can switch back and forth between English and Chinese.

nj star was a good program back in the 98 days where microsoft didn't tyr to step in yet. Nowdays theres a IME that comes with Microsoft. the mandarin tools work quite well, but the hk style pyin doesnt seem to respond

I am wiling to share my own experience. During 98 times, window does not support chinese character well(or i should say becoz it is not a fully 32 bit system?) At that time, normally i use chinese star. njstar is not my primary choice.

alright, so installed the chinese input methods, and now the lang bar would show up with the option of PRC or eng. however, when i open microsoft word, i still cannot type chinese - or i should say i don't know how to type in chinese.

i would click the option on the lang bar to chinese PRC and then type in pinyin, but no chinese characters would pop up. can someone help and/or teach me?!

The long method to type Chinese in MS Word (without any other software) is type the English word then ask MS Word to translate to Chinese, select the required Chinese character, copy then paste to the Chinese word document you are writing.

After installing Chinese (PRC) and the input method, most probably Microsoft Pingyin. In Microsoft word, you must do what you did, and switch it to Chinese PRC, but remember to check if your input method was Microsoft Pinyin, just setting it to chinese PRC will not work. Also, you will know if you did it correctly if additional buttons come out, which are options like simplified and traditional, etc.
