I'm a CBC, but i grew up speaking cantonese and tai-san (i never learned how to spell that) apparently my mom's side of the family came over with the first wave of chinese people who were from the taisan area HOW DO YOU SPELL THAT anyways, i was wondering what other chinese languages do people speak besides cantonese or mandarin
It's spelled Toi San if you pronounce it in Cantonese and Tai Shan if you pronounce it in Mandarin. I only use the Cantonese spelling since Toi San is in Canton. There are many other dialects of Chinese, too many to name all, but some examples include: -四邑語 [pronounced sei yup wah] (which is spoken by people from Sun Wui, Toi San, Hoi Ping, & Yun Ping in Canton province with minor variations in pronunciations) -Shanghainese -Fukienese -Taiwanese (very similar to Fukienese) -Haka -Szechuan dialect And many many more; but these are some of the one's I'm more familiar with, from friends and family who speak them.
First off, I spelled it wrong. It should be Chiu Chow. It's one of the eastern most prefectures of Canton province adjacent to Fukien province.
Only Cantonese and Mandarin. I can listen to people speak Fukien and know that they are speaking it; however, I have no comprehension of it. So don't ask me to translate it. I just know it's Fukien when I hear it.
I know how to converse in Cantonese, Hokkien and a lil bit of Mandarin. Now I am in the process of improving my Mandarin knowledge
I speak Fukienese which is my natural dialect. And I learned to speak Cantonese and Mandarin fluently.
I learned Italian in high school for 6 years.. I'm in the process of learning Korean (my boyfriend is Korean) I tried to take Mandarin classes (because I feel like it's important to learn the official language.) I'm still trying to learn. I want to learn Spanish too (important for an American as well. All those Spanish signs...no idea what's going on...) I took one class in college... If possible, of course, I would like to learn Toisan! But I don't think they have any official instruction material on that.... I want to learn Japanese too (just to see if there are any similarities...)
