Maybe by their own standard, they suck. But to win one of the tougher divisions in baseball for nine years in a row... you can't control when your players become hot or cold in a short series. I think every other team in baseball secretly drools to be in the Yankees shoes.
If your not FIRST you're LAST. Division titles are like 2nd place if you don't win. No team ever won the series and went back to gloat about the division title. Only the losers say "well at least we are the division champs."
Atlanta who? how many ppl remember them? 5 years down no one is going to remember what happened unless something out of the ordinary occurs.
records are records for a reason. you don't see anyone saying "oh, hank aaron's 755 home runs, who'll remember that?" or like, babe ruth. "oh, no one's going to remember babe ruth. who was he anyway?" same with football, you don't see anyone forgetting about the 1972 Dolphins when they were undefeated. just because you seem to have a foggy memory about a 14-year division pennant streak doesn't mean that the more baseball-educated community will forget as easily.
yeah, I think that's why cashman's starting to stock up on his pitching, starting with that gary sheffield trade that got them humberto sanchez. phil hughes and sanchez are good enough threats as potential 2-3 starters. jays, look out. speaking of the jays, I honestly wish we had more home grown talent other than simply signing a truckload of minor league free agents. like sal fasano. ooh wow, sal fasano. -rolleyes we've only got two decent guys in the farm: purcey and romero. and by decent, I mean "good, but not good enough to blow their competition out of the water". the other problem is that we can't stock up on pitching prospects unless we trade someone, and at this point, our active roster is so shallow that the value we'll get for any player we trade (whose name is not vernon wells, roy halladay, troy glaus, lyle overbay, aaron hill or alex rios) is going to be a bag of chips. see: hinske, eric. overbay and glaus seem tradable, but the offensive assets that both players have is too much for the likes of rios and hill to replace. so right now, what's basically happening with the jays is that we're waiting for rios, chacin and hill to get even better; that way, other vets are trading chips for pitching prospects. and for the last time, mr. ricciardi, 30-year-old pitchers are NOT prospects. see: gonzalez, geremi.
