Friday February 9, 2007 China Chinese action stars Jackie Chan and Jet Li will team up for the first time to star a new film inspired by legendary classical Chinese novel "Journey to the West" written during the Ming Dynasty. According to investor Huayi Brothers Company, Jet Li and Jackie Chan will play two famous roles respectively: Monkey King and Monk Sandy, derived from "Journey to the West." However, the movie's plot is totally different from the original novel. The two action stars will take on the challenge to play these two classical roles with brand new characteristics under a totally different plot. The official name for the movie has not yet been decided. Chinanews.com reported on Friday that the lead actress might be Liu Yifei and Disney animation "Lion King" director Rob Minkoff will be invited to direct the movie. The story of "Journey to the West" is so popular in China that it has become part of the repertoire of Chinese operas, TV series and comic books. i don't see Jet Li as the Monkey King Jackie Chan would be better for that part ... since he already acts like a monkey in most of his movies and plus Jet Li is a fanatic buddhist ... Monk Sandy would be perfect for him.
omg in ancient movies jackie chan havent done any of those ancient before , i think and is it a martial art film i thought jet li retire from this genre hmmm
I thought Jet Li retired after the last movie? Personally, I don't think Jet Li is suitable to be the Monkey King. He's old and unless he's one hell of a good actor; I doubt he'll be able to project the monkey qualities. I thought Dicky Cheung was good in that Journey of the West series. Even Stephen Chau did not successfully project the monkey quality in the Pandora's Box. My opinion ...
can't wait to see this movie. producing it in english? or in chinese? finally i can show my friends why i watcht he monkey seires when i was little and they all think i was weird.

the best monkey king i like so far and probably will like forever is the one played by dicky cheung.. he was really into his character and i remember as a kid that i reeeaaally loved it.
yea i thought dicky was alright in that series.. but the best has got to be the original mandarin one...

i don't think jet li is suitable for the monkey king play role. They should switch them around. Jackie for monkey king and jet li for monk sand.
