In Texas, a white teenager burns down her family's home and receives probation. A black one shoves a hall monitor and gets 7 years in prison. The state NAACP calls it `a signal to black folks.'

"There was the 19-year-old white man, convicted last July of criminally negligent homicide for killing a 54-year-old black woman and her 3-year-old grandson with his truck, who was sentenced in Paris to probation and required to send an annual Christmas card to the victims' family.

And then there is the case that most troubles Cherry and leaders of the Texas NAACP, involving a 14-year-old black freshman, Shaquanda Cotton, who shoved a hall monitor at Paris High School in a dispute over entering the building before the school day had officially begun.

The youth had no prior arrest record, and the hall monitor--a 58-year-old teacher's aide--was not seriously injured. But Shaquanda was tried in March 2006 in the town's juvenile court, convicted of "assault on a public servant" and sentenced by Lamar County Judge Chuck Superville to prison for up to 7 years, until she turns 21."

This is probably one of the saddest things iv ever read. Its amazing how backwater some of America's southern states still are. I think the only way that this story could be more outrageous is if the girl was sentenced to pick cotton for the rest of her life. -censored The judge was probably a member of the KKK.

What year is this now? 1900?

This is really sad, but I guess I wouldn't expect US to do otherwise -- just because they SAY they are so fair and equal, the reality is that due to circumstances including difference in class and socioeconomic status, blacks are still stereotyped as the trouble makers and often punished more severely.

Your last line made my day: more outrageous is if the girl was sentenced to pick cotton for the rest of her life. SO TRUE. The liberation is still an empty shell without the public (and officials alike) acting according to it.

Don't deceive yourself. Obama will likely not be elected in 2008 due to the fact he's black. Thats how it works in USA. They are simply not ready to accept a black president.

African Americans have always been treated like this for centuries in America. I am not suprised what happened to him. Nothing is fair. Women are still looked down upon. I think this reason alone is why our planet is advancing as slow as it is. No one will be living in poverty anymore but no, instead we have a War going on in Iraq at the moment. Great huh?

If I had to choose, I'd pick Hilary over Obama. I'd rather have America be the Oxygen channel than BET.

    omg, I'm racist.

Feral, you sound so enthusiastic about politics, why don't you do something like petition your electorate or even run for office.

Neways, yeah same thing with New York car accidents. Diverse counties =more money from car insurance companies for your injuries.

    Yeah, Hilary Clinton woot!!!

I do not understand what you mean by less black than Bill Clinton? If you mean that he doesn't speak and act like a Hip Hop artist or a general stereotypical black person then probably. Fact is he's still black.
I've got nothing against Mr.Obama but its unlikely he will win. Some African Americans themselves stated that they dont support him as his motives aren't really to bring equality to the black people.

In my opinion I would rather see him be elected then Hilary Clinton. She was trouble even during when Bill Clinton was in office. We will see how it pans out soon. I just hope Bush doesn't go crazy before that happens.

  12. well, if america isnt ready to accept a black president, how are they sure theyll accept a woman? and theyre the top right now... i mean.. we barely heard of that white american male whos running too.. so either way, its a female, or an african-decent.

i would choose for both, but because im influencedby 24 (the show) obama gets my vote if i was american lol

lol I actually want Obama to win. I just read one of his books in my english class as an assignment and he seems like a really down-to-earth type of guy. I never liked Bill Clinton or Hilary.

Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison in 1998 called Clinton "the first Black president," saying "Clinton displays almost every trope of blackness: single-parent household, born poor, working-class, saxophone-playing, McDonald's-and-junk-food-loving boy from Arkansas," and, despite his career accomplishments, comparing Clinton's scrutinized sex life to the stereotyping and double standards that blacks typically endure.
