Vista will make a speed test on the USB drive that you insert. If it is fast enough, than it will let you enable readyboost on it. You can plug any flash drive in and see if it'll work.

I use a Corsair 133x 2gb SD card on my laptop for readyboost (built in card reader).

The difference isn't great because I haven't maxed out my 2gb of internal ram yet. When you ram is all used up, and your computer will start using lots of swap files, that's when readyboost is suppose to help a lot. So if u really want to test and have a desktop, take out some ram (say to like 512mb), load 5 resource heavy programs, then do the same with readyboost, you'll notice then.

^Yeah, you only have two gigs right? lol, that's good, why would you need the ready boast? Like what you said any flash memory will do for ready boast.

  4. you know.... just stick with xp, and dedicate a certain amount of HD space into ram... i have 4G of ram in total lol

I have 712mb with XP, but yeah I think it's the same thing except it doesn't go thru your hd and hog up your hd; goes through something dedicated like flash, but good stuff either way.
I'm reluctant to upgrade to vista because of software compatibilities issues.

Yes this technique does add some extra resource to do some more stuff at the same time without any mods inside of my machine and its cheaper but the real enhancement lies within, I like opening my system and cleaning out some dirt it accumulates.>.<

This enhancement is only for novices.-scooter
Tried Vista but still like XP until I get more 64bit hardware, well let me bring out, a new platform requires better hardware, don't upgrade if you don't have the hardware support you'll just end up complaining and confused about where the enhancement lies.

If you have a spare usb key laying around this may be good. But I think I would be a bit worried about the fact that flash memory has a finite read and write cycle.

  10. ^ good call there...

You guys realise that that NV memory has a limited amount of R/W right?
If you are going to be using your USB stick as a swap, it's just going to decrease the lifetime of the stick.
I don't really know how ReadyBoost does it, but in general, it's not a good idea.

EDIT: Guuu~ Nobb beat me too it...

No Offense to Vista user, is this even new? using a storage device as RAM? In XP, you can use your own harddrive to give up some space for virtual RAM.

most ppl dont know that this feature was out with xp for the longest time. they think vista is the first to use it. it just that it is now its incorporated into the os itself and made visible.

  14. ^ yea.. its true... ive made an extra 2 gig of virtual mem on the HD... but i barely use over 50 megs... so as of now.. no need for extra ram yet..
