Depending on what kind of doctor you are, I would say being a doctor is the most intellectually stimulating & the least boring of all jobs, esp an ER doc.

-Every patient you see is different.
    -Every day is different.
    -Make life/death decisions
-Procedures, procedures, procedures (eg intubation, central line, chest tubes, thoracotomies, crich's)
-one of the highest paid professions
-depending on specialty, don't have to work too many hours (ER docs work on average 34-36hrs/wk, which is less than most 9-5 jobs averaging 40hrs/wk)

No I didn't. The post is about "most boring jobs or professions," and not how long it takes to attain them.

Besides, that's the price to pay for such a great job.

    Your boss.

It's also not about the perks of becoming a doctor.

True, but my post did answer the question. And if one looked at the 34-36 work hours "perk" in a different way, it also justifies why being an ER doc is the least boring...they have so much free time to do other things....

Is this an internet thing like "lol" or is it a term commonly used where you live? This is honestly the first time I've heard it being used.

You get to party at night THEN sleep DURING work!

Hm, I guess you are right. If you are talking about an ER doctor, which in its own right is EXTREMELY stressful and most ER doctors just go for resident doctors at hospitals after a while.

Unlike HOUSE M.D., Life/death decisions are not as glamourous as the drama depicts, many doctors end up quitting the job and spend the rest of their life talking to a shrink about a wrong choice.

I thought there are technicians and nurses for most procedures.

And the tradeoff for a shorter week means sometimes (that means A LOT OF TIMES) you will have to work night shifts (that's 12am-8am) which you better pray nothing drastic happens since rarely people can function and think properly during those hours.

I disagree with drs being a boring occupation. If there's passion for their job, research goals, and a chance for promotion, nonetheless...it can't possibly be that boring.

How about gas attendants? i think its when you're doing the same things over and over again, then it begins to get boring.

Thanks for your post hiake. I'm glad you brought up some points about ER docs. Here's some more info for anyone who's interested about ER physicians.

Emergency medicine is actually not as stressful as the media make it out to be. The doctors who choose to go into this field usually have a very mellow and down to earth personality and the stress doesn't bother them much. Also, they get trained to deal with emergent situations so they don't usually panic as much compared to another doctor who wasn't trained to deal with these situations.

In the US, the way medicine works after medical school is the doctor will go through several years of residency training (3-4 yrs for ER docs). The first year is called internship, which is part of the 3-4 yrs. After that, they sit for their specialty boards to become board certified. After that, they are on their own. The only difference between a resident doctor an a board certified doc is that the resident docs run through their cases with the boarded docs, but both are allowed to make independent decisions, write prescriptions, and take care of patients on their own.

Actually, the life and death decisions are what makes emergency medicine such an interesting and fun field to go into because it gives these docs an adrenaline rush. Most go into the field so they can make these decisions; and it feels awesome when one is able to save someone from making one of these choices. And nowadays with new scheduling protocols, not many ER docs will quit their jobs.

Techs & nurses do things like shoot Xrays, do CT scans, draw blood, put in foley catheters, and run EKGs; The invasive procedures like the ones I listed are only legally performed by a doctor only.

ER docs don't actually do that many night shifts. They take turns with their collegues. On average, ER docs do 2-4 overnight shifts per month unless they choose to do more for higher pay. And depending on what volume of patients the ER sees per year, sometimes there could be 2 ER docs working overnight at the same time so the disasters are not as big a deal. And for overnight shifts, the docs usually have at least 12 hours prior to sleep and change their schedules around so they are not working 24 hours straight. Surgery resident doctors are the ones who pull the 24-36 hour shifts because of the way their training is structured. So ER docs are actually pretty fresh throughout the entire night of work.

Hope this clears up some of the info.

Hm, probably our source is different (Canada vs. US perhaps?). I know that sometimes one may end up stuck with a hectic schedule like 12 hours days for 4 days, though I doubt it will happen for ER doctors... I guess it also depends on your specialty. =_=b

You know a lot about medicine -- are you a med student?!?! *admires*
