I thought it is old news =_=b The research had been going on for a while now, but surely no positive results/findings will be published in quite a while since it may raise a "OMG, we just give them another reason to turn into homosexuals" retarded concern.
and dolly died.... u know theres been lots of diff clones, not just on sheep its been done on pigs etc etc but alot of them died of "unnatural causes" ie side effects of hte process, so its still not something to really use at this stage which is y the so called "ethics/morals/values" all come up for those discussions its like, u make a "clone" of urself (or whoeva) so u can obtain their stem cells or organs etc, so that they can transplant that into u (or whoeva) without the body rejection. but essentially ur still sacrificing a life to save another, which is usually where the controversy comes up... but sooner or later, we'd be able to design our babies so that they won't even haf problems/diseases cos they can be screened. the more so called "designer babies" lifes gonna be more interesting =)
Well, I guess I place "designer babies" in the same realm as "cloning" -- just manipulating science to your advantage. Ethics has never been an issue for me, I think it's silly to use ethic to stop the progress of science -- unless they can ban stem cell research on ethical basis globally (which is totally not happening any time soon) I don't see the point of banning it AT ALL. If the research is done on your juristiction, at least you can regulate it.
As I see it, some fields of science are still pretty, trail and error approach. Creating a clone like sheep Dolly is just a prove of concept. This is just one step further then a white/theoretical paper. There are still lots of things unknowns to be investigated. But if there is a big urge. I think that a "designer baby" or artificially grown sperm will be reality soon.
