(Kyodo) A Japanese student at Virginia Tech said Monday she could easily have been one of the targets in the shooting spree that left 33 people dead, including the suspected shooter. Mariko Uno, 23, from Kyoto Prefecture, said in a telephone interview she was attending a class in a building next to Norris Hall, one of the two locations where the apparently lone gunman, whose identity has not been released, opened fire. She was scheduled to have an afternoon class in Norris Hall. "I could have been involved," Uno said. She said she and about 20 of her classmates were moved to another room that had a lock on the door, where they stayed for about 2 1/2 hours. Uno said she saw a wounded person through a window being taken away by medical personnel on a stretcher as well as a student with his arm wrapped in a bandage being evacuated. "I was really surprised that a rampage like this could hit the campus of such a safe country town," she said. Meanwhile in Tokyo, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuhisa Shiozaki said the government confirmed that all 21 Japanese students at Virginia Tech were safe. Calling Monday's mass shooting at the university "very tragic," Shiozaki said, "We'd like to express our sincere condolences to the more than 30 people who have died." Hundreds of other Asian students also attend the university. The gunman was identified as a South Korean. There are about 460 Korean nationals studying there, and an estimated 500 students of Korean descent, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported.
what does it matter that he was korean? so the fact that he wasn't chinese supposed to make this situation better?

If I read this stuff I think this person must be mentally ill and wonder why his parents/ relatives haven´t noticed this before and seeked help for him.
Who said that would make the situation better? AC0110 asked who else felt relieved it´s not someone from China because a radio debate showed how they felt ashamed if it was a Chinese guy. I agree with that I wasn´t looking forward to defend myself and fellow Chinese people and the fact he is still an Asian guy doesn´t help much either. And if you don´t look at his race at all I think we can conclude he is a very disturbed person who needed help but apparently no one offered him real help. It´s a horrible thing he did but I guess people with some sort of psychological problems or are manic depressive etc. but who are coping with it thanks to treatments and medicines won´t be happy that this guy will put these groups of people in worse daylight than it already is. Ok, maybe a uncoherent story but it´s 4.23am over here, I actually just wanted to say there´s no `group´ that would like to be associated with him right now.
with so much going on in the world, its not really surprising. there are people who probably have the same intent but they dont act on it. everyone @ one point or another thought bout it. on an ABC special, they showed his english papers which were plays, all which include violent conduct. all of them showed the similarity of how he wanted to kill some one or a professor. the interview with his eng prof said he thought it to be a "satire." i cant see how numerous papers and plays written on murder or killing someone can be seen as satire...

But yea, he is asian and this'll cause some havok in asian people and stuff even if it's just as likely for someone of a different race to do the same. Just happened to be asian. It's pretty sick how he'd go off killing innocent people as well and not just the ones he had a problem with. I heard it had something to do with a girl. What's even more sick is that he just goes and suicides after causing that much pain to people.
i was listening to chinese radio and some ppl were like thankful it wasn't a chinese guy....ppl wer like relieved................most ppl think asian as in chinese and steretype a lot

I think it's sooo sad that US asians are encouraging the stereotype by saying "oh how he better not be chinese/korean/etc..." Why can't we see ourselves as INDIVIDUALS and not be identified as a group? It doesn't matter what race he is, he should be viewed as himself. Here's a link to the stories he wrote, very disturbing. ok here's where the COnfusion was!! so apparently he passed thru Shanghai customs or something before coming to US... and the Chinese newspaper completely screwed up and wrote him as being Chinese... '
Seriously is a tragic accident but It suprises me that the time frame difference was so long before they actually found out
This is really a horrible incident and it doesn't matter if the gunman was whatever nationality, it doesn't change what happened. What makes this story worse is that my friend lives near VA Tech and the gunman's parents are acquaintances with my friend's friend's grandparents. << Yes very confusing but her friend also lives close to her. It was very surprising how close the gunman was to her =/ Glad that she's ok
yupp i agree, when I first heard the story that the gunman was an Asian, im like... that makes Asians look bad. It doesnt matter if hes korean or jap or chinese or whatnot, hes still Asian... still makes us look bad =x
So all of a sudden your a fucking caring person for a few days out of the entire year. You said it exactly, lets all care when its close to home. Fuck the rest of the world right. Interesting, we can't experience pain if its happening thousands of miles away, only when its in our own country. A real fucking humanitarian you are. It not the numbers are insignificant, its a tragedy yes, but to jump in the bandwagon and say oh yes, let us all start caring. Then a few days after its just a memory. Yes its tragic, but are you some sort of a caring person only when its close to home? Supposedly so, as most of us live sheltered fucking lives to what is happening out there.
