It doesn't really CAUSE retardation, just that the chance of having genetic disease is WAY higher without genetic variation (from non-blood-related people). Especially the disease which are "marked" by a recessive code of the DNA.
Yes, one disease can wipe out one whole population from the same DNA type. That's why diversity makes a species strong.

I don't think this is right. Second of all you don't know what your child will be like using your own genetic. Third of all this is almost like cloning yourself...
@Linux4ever: In fact you NEVER know what your offspring will look like even when you conceive it the "normal" way (though I see nothing normal with the basketbelly) and I think the whole "almost like cloning yourself" is the appeal, though as Maverick had said one single disease will easily wipe out a population. @Kher89: Yes, and I totally think I came from a rib bone, thousands of years ago.
