    Story from Digitmag -

A price cut for the PlayStation 3 games console may be in the cards as Sony looks to strengthen the platform and expand its penetration.

Sony said Thursday that both pricing and production volumes are under review as it looks to take its next steps now that the third-generation PlayStation has been launched in Japan, North America, Europe and Australasia. The company stressed a price cut is not imminent, however, meaning it may still be weeks or months away.

Sony had already been eyeing cost savings from using a more advanced technology to make the Cell processor, which sits at the heart of the machine. First generation consoles used chips made on a 90-nanometre production process, but Sony will switch soon to chips made on a 65-nanometere line. Those chips are 40 per cent smaller and thus cheaper to make.

Sony hasn't said when the 65-nanometere Cell will begin appearing in the PlayStation 3, but in mid-March IBM, another of the companies that makes the processor, said it had begun making the more advanced chip.

In January, when Sony announced its third-quarter earnings, chief financial officer Nobuyuki Oneda ruled out the possibility of price cuts for the PS3 in the near future, but hinted it could happen in two or three years' time. That thinking has apparently been revised.

    Story from Akihabara News -

Here's a possibly good news for all the gamers out there !
We received a mail from Sony today and this is what it said:

Sony considers slashing price of PS3 console
The assertion that Sony may reduce the price of PS3 is based on comments made by Ryoji Chubachi during an interview. He explained that the budgeting process for PS3 pricing and volumes would be re-examined as market forces and the competitive environment change.

That is good news, they still lack decent games to play, with the exception of a few, but then again neither does the Wii.

Wow, talk about losing face... I secretly suspect it has something to do with the not-as-well-received-as-expected initial sale...

BTW, Wii in Canada apparently jacked up the price, from 279.99CDN to 289.99 CDN. 10$ is not much but it kind of shows that it's in demand... (sort of)

But of course I am biased :p

They want to ban GTA4 in NYC, because it takes place in NYC and the terrorist gameplay in it. But we see that stuff in movies and tv too. People here are still sensitive about the whole 9-11, I can't really blame them for feeling that way. GTA never appealed to me anyway.

Not surprising they are dropping price on PS3. Since the amount of people buying it compared to the Wii and even the 360. The games offered now are pathetic.

^ You guys hope it gets better lo~ Which probably will happen anyways. ^+++^ It was miscalculation on Sony's part to think PS3 will make be sold out despite it steep price (come on, I know the hardcore gamers will starve for a month to get it, but it's totally losing the adolescent market)

    GRRRR...

n the last few weeks there have been various reports of Japanese analysts predicting a PlayStation 3 price cut sooner rather than later.

For example, Famitsu, a Japanese gaming magazine, reported that an official price cut from Sony was just around the corner. And they predicted a change in the supply quantity as well.

Today Sony responded to these rumours:

"PS3 prices and shipment plans for the future should be determined by market trends and competition. Sony currently doesn't have any specific plan to cut the PlayStation 3's price.”

Although this reaction is denying the recent rumours, we wouldn't be too surprised to see a price cut sooner than expected.

    >_< darn flip-flopping corporate bastards

^ Just wait and see. It's going to happen. Now that even less people are going to buy unless they are desperate (since it may get a price cut anytime)...

A price drop of about 100$ would be about right, especially with the 360 Elite coming out around $480US.
