hindsight is always 20/20. at the time, carpenter came off a season-ending shoulder injury, a risk that the jays didn't want to take because their pitching depth was already shallow enough: halladay (19-7), escobar, and a flailing esteban loaiza (who incidentally almost won the cy young after he left toronto the next year). the cardinals had enough pitching depth to take a chance on carpenter as a fifth starter.

delgado was simply occupying too much of our payroll (see: rodriguez, alex), but we did try to re-sign him for cheaper. delgado's agent, scott boras, was just being a douchebag, and that is why virtually no GM in the league likes boras (except maybe theo epstein). with the departure of delgado, we failed miserably, definitely. however, consider what our payroll figures were. with that kind of money, and lack of blue chips (blue chips meaning alex rios, aaron hill, gustavo chacin and no one else, really) in the minors, we weren't going to be competitive. that's why ted rogers stepped in and increased payroll so we could get (and afford) a.j. burnett, b.j. ryan, glaus, overbay and molina.

You have a point about the baseball community remembering it, but outside of the baseball community they're not going to remember it. When you mention Babe Ruth or Hank Aaron most ppl would know since they're out of the ordinary. So you have to be a real baseball fanatic to even remember the 14 game streak. You ask a sole baseball fanatic that doesn't watch football and see if he remembers the 1972 Dolphins. The point is the winner gets all the attention. The Colts last year almost had an undefeated season but they didn't win so you're telling me someone 5-10 years from now will remember it?

Yankees suck. They have good players, but no chemistry between them. That's what they get for trying to buy their way to the World Series.

there are plenty of "almosts" every year. like the phoenix suns and how they "almost" beat the record for the longest NBA winning streak, or the oakland a's in 2002, and how they "almost" beat the longest MLB winning streak.

people remember who the number one guy in, say, NHL total career points (gretzky), or the top guy in total strikeouts (nolan ryan). they don't bother remembering who number two or number twenty two was. if you hold a record (a REAL record, not like who won the most games on a friday in rain whenever joe schmoe was sitting in row 4 seat 39). winning your division 14 years in a row is phenomenal, because you'd have to be able to win year in and year out for 14 years, meaning stocking up on lower-round talents and making sure they help you out. or even using said draft picks and trading them off for proven veterans. sure, the yankees won four world series during the braves' division run, but to win a pennant for 14 years straight is just incredible.

My previous post agrees with you but like I said if you ask someone who doesn't watch baseball if they remember the 14 years straight divisional title and they'll say now. Now if you ask them who the best baseball team there is, they'll probably give you world series champs from either last year or the year before but most would just say yankees since they won at least 4 times in the last 10 years. Are the yankees the best? Heck no!

yeah, well, the general community needs some sports education. the yankees are merely good, but I agree with you. they're not the best team, because every team has its falls and flaws. case in point, kansas city. remember the days when bret saberhagen pwned the AL? yeah, now kc is a joke.

i think the yankees have learn from overspending in the last couple of years. They have seriously restocked their once weak farm system and they have several very promising prospects that may be able to contribute in 2 or 3 years. But as far as the 2007 season is concern, they still have the best lineup, top to bottom, in the league and will be right ther in october to compete for the title.

I think the Yankee is not spending crazy yet. But who knows, the owner is going to do... THey need a good Gm Cashman, is not doing the job with the money he's got to spent./

Arod is on fire. this will be the year that he silences his critics and leads the Yankees to the 27 championship. but before that we have a short 3 game series at Fenway. not sure who starts on Saturday, i heard Karstens ( reactiveated from the DL).

the news will of course focus on DiceK against a AA rookie Wright.

Cashman is one of the smartest GMs in baseball. Now that George is giving him more free reign, look at what he's done. Traded Randy Johnson, Sheffield, and Wright, for some pretty good prospects. We got younger, cheaper, and rid of two clubhouse cancers. Our farm system went from barren to top 10. Our starting pitching doesn't have to be great because our line up and bullpen will carry us.

The post season is a different story, In a short series starting pitching is very important, especially if your line up is not hitting. But we have some live arms coming up if not by the end of this regular season then next year, most notably Phil Hughes. Thank Cashman and the other managers for not letting him get traded, and giving him time to develop his pitches in the minors.

i agree, the Yankees are better in the long run...but still losing the first game by a blown save by Mariano Rivera hurts big time. considering he gave up hit after hit, after hit to weak hitters.

Yankees are yesterday's news. They have great players, but they still seem like they don't have enough.

all the Yankees are lacking is a stable rotation... that's it... we have the bats, we have the rotation, and we have THE closer... he ain't called the Sandman for nothing... although he blew two saves in a row, its probably because he hasn't played very much... he's only really had the 2 chances so far =/

i agree, the Yankees, if they have a stable rotation.......can win it all. So far we have yet to have a healthy rotation. considering how we only have 1 legit pitcher ( pettite) and another that is a rookie ( Igawa) healthy....being 2 games out is not bad.
