Well, Canon will replace the current models with models with the new Digic III processor.
The Canon EOS 1D Mark III is the first with 2 of these chips. The older generation like the EOS 400D have only Digic II processor

hiake - Does this recipient know anything about Photography? I assume he/she does since you did mention it. I suggest first researching what he or she has. Because SLR camera have removable lens and if he or she already have lens for one brand then he or she can use the lenses on the new camera.

I'm a free lance photographer so buying extra lenses can get a bit expensive. I have a Canon EOS 20D and since I already have Canon lenses, I won't be switching to another camera brand. If I happen to switched to a Nikon SLR, my lenses won't fit that and I'll have to buy a whole new set of lens all over again.

I do a lot of reading on these sites:
    www.dpreview.com
    www.dcviews.com

I saw the 1D Mark III and am VERY excited! I've seen the burst shot rate and WOW! -inlove

One more thing, DSLR have the advantage that you get RAW files.
These files can be fine-tuned with programs like Photoshop :D

Yup the person receiving the camera knows quite a bit of photography & camera for an amateur. I guess I need to peek into the lens part, I think he's got Nikon lens set...

personally i'd got with a rebel. not too expensive and rugged. but if its for professional use or quality i'd just get the body and get a proper lense. the lens it comes with is basically useless plastic

Waah, too late to add my 5 cents...

Like others already said; it depends on what you want to do with the dslr...
Uhm, Nikon is quite expensive and Canon can be good for normal use but if you like to shoot at gigs (or other more challenging situations) like me you'd better invest in a fast lens of f/3.5 or lower. Downside of Nikon/Canon is that they often have to use specific lenses made for that type of model otherwise it's not compatibale, hence I personally would recommend Pentax camera's as their lenses are interchangeable.

But if your friend already has a Nikon lens set, he/she probably will stick to the Nikon brand and there's nothing wrong with it.

@Taxloss: When you say about compatibility of lens in specific model for Nikon, what do you mean?? Would you mind elaborate??? Would his Nikon lens set not compatible with a Nikon SLR then???

Oops, I just realize it should have been DSLR...

Well, it really depends -and I have to say I'm not that well informed about Nikon products- but I know that some series lenses are specifically produced for some generation Nikon camera's and I'm not sure about DSLR's.

well i assume ur getting the nikon dslr (whichever one from their range)
generally speaking, all the nikon lens are compatible with each other
the higher end models just come with the camera base, no lens
theres no specific lens for a specific camera model (not to my knowledge?)
and i've also used the old slr lens onto the dslr, it works fine, just gotta do all the manual tuning

    i have the d50 myself (which i think isn't available anymore >< )
its a pretty good entry level camera, didn't want to spend more until i figured out wat i needed (as in functions wise)
other than that, can just get better lens etc
keep in mind it still costed me 1500

I'm going to take issue with this statement regarding Canon lenses/body.

Canon EF lenses are interchangeable throughout the whole line of EOS camera bodies. This would be their entire lineup of DSLRs.

There are Canon EF-S lenses (and some 3rd-party lenses) which are specifically designed for crop-sensor bodies. These bodies are the 300D/350D/400D and 20D/30D.

So EF-S lenses will not work with full-frame bodies.

But that really shouldn't be a factor for consideration.

Full frame camera bodies start at ~$2800USD for the 5D and go up to ~$7000 USD for the 1DSMkII.

And if someone did want to upgrade up to a full-frame body -- it is fairly easy to sell your crop-sensor EF-S lenses anyways.

well i'd say its stupid to buy a d200 or the upper end of the canons for a first dslr camera. starting off, ur best using entry levels and finding out wat type of fotography u like b4 upgrading to one that suits ur purpose.

generally speaking, for all the canons/nikons the lens are interchangable within their range. plus once u upgrade to the higher end, u won't b using the lower end stuff anyway, so it doesn't matter too much.

but just make sure u know wat u need =)
and the d40, i dunno, i don't like it, apparently cut down lotsa stuff and not too worth it compared to d50.

i guess also see if u know any friends working within area/shops. friends in canon get abt 40% off cost prices on certain stuff. which saves u a hell of a lot. if only he got in earlier i coulda got canon ><

If you have lens for a brand already, stick with that brand if you can reuse the lens.

The D40 is not a good choice for someone with Nikon lens already. The D40 needs lens with an internal focus drive motor. So your choices of lens are limited if you want to have Auto Focus (and you'd definitely want auto focus on a DSLR).

Careful if you are buying cameras online as well, lots of scams out there. I've encountered sites that sell plastic lens mounts (so they can't anything more than the mediocre kit lens).
