what other chinese languages do you speak?

i speak fukkienese at home. its pretty much the same as taiwanese. my mum usually watch tainwanese tv shows and she understands it perfectly, but i found it hard to understand because the dialect is a bit different.

I speak cantonese and mandarin and also speak Hokkien(Fu Jian) and also bit of Teow Chew. Can understand little hakka as my mom usually speak that dialect with my uncle.

I speak Hak ka with my parents and English nearly all the time, but can also speak basic cantonese - but would really love to learn mandarin one day

I understand Cantonese, Toi San , and little bit of mandarin.
I think its important first to learn your local area dialect , because it might fade away. Like all the smaller languages like Toi San, hakka, Taiwanese, and etc are giving way to Mandarin.

Ooo i think the different are thought this thread is about other Chinese dialects. Wonder why some of the posts mentioned other foreign language.

That's right the official Chinese language is Mandarin, the rest are dialects.

Fukien Wah & Taiwanese are both variations of Mun Nam Wah, one of the original languages of the 6 kindoms before the Chun dynasty. That's why they sound familiar, but over time has digressed.

 

I disagree. Chinese IS a language and dialect is dialect, INCLUDING Mandarin. You are referring to China's designation of Mandarin as its national language, but it doesn't mean that Mandarin isn't just another dialect of Chinese.

But I agree with you about the thread topic. It's annoying that people can't read and start writing about the non Chinese languages they speak...that should go in the "what languages can you speak thread." This thread is about Chinese dialects they can speak.
