i think its a matter of safety
had some pple fixing some furniture up
i asked them to take of their shoes
they say its a safety requirement from the company
if they get their feet hurt i may be held responsible for it

I try to put newspaper down on my carpet if I am expecting services people to come... since they don't take off their shoes (only a handful ever did)...

Yeah most of my Dutch friends don't take their shoes off but that's not a big problem as I don't have carpet at home. I do feel somewhat quilty if I go to their houses and I ask if I should get my shoes off, they tell me "it's alright, keep it on like we do" but somehow thinks I'm going to dirt their carpets with my shoes.

On the other hand, yeah Asians automatically take their shoes off and you offer them a pair of guest slippers if they want. Oh and my black friends too, they really hate it when you walk into their homes with shoes on, they'll even kick your ass if you do that! -lol

I live in M'sia so i have no problems with people not taking their shoes off. It's our culture here to remove our shoes b4 entering someone's house :D

Ok, I used a hyperbool; they don't really physically kick someone's ass, but the black female friends can scold at you if you don't take off your shoes before entering. Saw it once happening when there was a white guy refusing to take his shoes off because he won't be staying long anyway and he got the black girl pretty irritated...(he just don't get it that it doesn't matter how long you stay...) -lol

Could be... I don't really know that guy but I've this idea he's always a bit recalcitrant type of person...you know, doing the opposite things of the rest of the group. (if he had smelly feet, he could say he'll be waiting outside, it was only for a few minutes anyway.)

maybe his socks didn't match or they had holes in them. reminds me of the 'always wear clean underwear" adage

Happened once in my life and it was in the wintermorning, still dark in the house and not bothering to turn the lights on. No one saw it except my Mum when I came back home later that day....-sweat

I've worn different shoes to work, but luckily they looked very similar. I pair all my socks after washing so I don't have that problem.
