i Cant see a problem with having it 24/7, like prevously said...only down side is power ocnsumpion ana maybe a little slower at times as the system cache memory is used up...

  5. well.. think of it as a car.... if you leave the engine on forever, first, you lose fuel, second, you wear out the parts of the car... for example, the pistons, they scrape the inside of the chamber, thus leading to a reduction in power.... its the same with a computer... you lose electricity, and the mechanical parts of the computer, like the harddrive, would wear off due to continuous rotation... thus leading to low performance...

I prefer to not leave the comp on, when I'm not using it.

From my experience its not good for your computer.
Better turn it out when you can. I mean twice a week only a rest of 8 hours is not much for the comp. The computer got more time so it will now absorb much little things which makes the computer noisy and hot. If its to hot it will cause damage for your computer. Better clean it now and turn it off more often. Before its to late :p

What a good thread. This is something that I've wondered about also. When I leave mine on, I worry about electrical fires so I usually turn it off when I'm not home. Maybe I worry for nothing. Thanks for all the comments.

  9. ^ electrical fires eh? the only fire i got from a computer was when i left a lit candle beside my crt monitor :D

    the monitor melted XD

but the pc was safe thank god lol

as long as there is enough fans to provide proper cooling, there should be no problem. Think of the servers that are use to run small-businesses, large companies, internet web storage services, etc. They use the most power efficient components of the computer to limit heat and maximize cooling. Now compare that to a regular computer, it has alot more parts that add to the heat temperature, the idea is to cool it enough that the components will not over-heat to a point where it will malfunction. Thus the need for fans and other various equipment to cool it down.

if you comp is doing something all the time, running it 24*7 makes it last longer (in actual working hours) compared to if you switch it on once or twice a day.

The only thing you have to take into consideration is the hd life being a lot shorter. Of course if you don't need the screen, switching it off when you don't use it will save a lot of electricity.

  15. why not just hibernate it?

it shuts down harddrives, saves your opened tasks, and boots up rather quickly.

dont even want to put my comp on stanby mode at night, the power LED is insanely bright blue and i cant sleep

it also sounds like a hurricane if i keep it on, thats why i turn it off at night...

  17. ^ lol thats why you make yourself a cover :p

If your power LED is that bright, there's probably an independant power connection for it. I have a Sonata II and the blue LED on the front panel annoys me so I have it disconnected.

As for running the computer 24/7... The main things I'd look out for are your hard drives and your power supply.

If you do run your computer 24/7, try to invest on some better drives or even Raid 1 if your data is really important to you. Enterprises normally use enterprise grade drives which are designed for 24/7 operation... Consumer drives are rated at 8/5... Some may argue that it's a marketing gimmick but I'll leave that to the reader...

Power is something often neglected users. Most stock PSUs are unreliable. A decent entry level supply will only run you 30-40 which I find to be well worth the investment. And for those worried about spikes, get a surge protector and set your motherboard bios to remain off during power outages.

yeh if i have to keep it on, i use a book to cover it up. cant be bother to have to disconnect the power led, and i prefer it in

but the main reason is its so loud, 2x 120mm fans, the cpu fan, gfx fan and the super 6000rpm screemer that is the chipset fan....

I leave my comp pn 24/7 even when not using it. Never had a problem but never thought about electricity since I thought they don’t' use a whole lot. No wonder my parents used to complain about the electric bill all the time when I lived at home. lol
