We reported back in November of 2006 that Japan was planning to open an unwanted “baby hatch” and it appears it has finally opened for business. The nation’s first baby hatch, where parents can anonymously drop off infants they cannot care for, was installed in Jikei Hospital in Kumamoto on Tuesday. The hatch will begin operations next week after the municipal health center has completed its inspection. A door measuring about 45 centimeters by 60 centimeters has been installed on the wall of a counseling room for neonatal infants. Behind the door, there is an incubator in which parents can put their baby. The hospital has placed a letter in the incubator asking the parent to submit his or her name, as well as a notice asking for some clue to be left so the child can find its parents in the future. Beside the door, the hospital has installed an intercom for consultation and prepared cards with the telephone numbers of a child consultation center and other relevant institutions. source: WAN
Guess there would be less abortion then. I fail to see the reason tho in regards of leaving a clue for the child to find his/ her parents in the future. That would be cruel to the kid unless if the parents dont have the means to support the child.
After reading the thread about the parent who killed his twins... i feel like there should be one of these in India.
they have the same idea in the United States you can drop off any child at firestation or hospital no questions asked better to abandon a child with people who can then take it to the appropriate places to be cared for than to be left on the street
lol.... i think just leaving a name and stuff isn't sufficient to "find his or her parent" ... come on, it's japan, even a cell phone number is probably more reliable than just a name lol. semes a lil cruel that you have to offer information but not enough
this sux.. not fair to the children.. if i'm the child, not sure if i want to come back and look for my parents..
OMG people are coming up with more ingenious ideas everyday I wonder what they are gonna do when their box is full of babies and lack of man-power to take care of them. This is just like encouraging people to be irresponsible.
i guess they will do all they can but you wont expect to see 100 ppl lined up to drop a baby they will try to do it more secretive i guess
@ br in some ways yes, its an encouragement, but think of all the abortion that might be prevented from this. Maybe the government should hand out free condoms to prevent unwanted pregancies.
Prolly doesn't help either if the person thinks,"i can keep this baby to drop it off later"... People who wanna abort would still do it; because they would have to carry the baby for 9 months; definitely not an easy task. And during those 9 months; imagine dealing with all the stress/anxiety etc. IMO they would still do it rather than choose to have it and give it up. And usually people who go for abortion don't do it just for the fun of it.. They do it because of a specific reason... Unless the reason is financial issues sth like "Oh i can't afford to take care of the baby; feed him etc"... then this would probably come in useful.. But it's just like asking people to make free babies for the Government
Maybe teenage girls who doesnt want the baby but do not wish to abort, that would be the option for them to drop off the baby. But then again, we live in a screwed up world where things do not make sense a lot of times.
^Yeah; and that's why I say it's sorta like encouraging people to be irresponsible.. It's like a teenager would say,"So what if I haf unsafe sex and get pregnant? I can give it to the Government..." Taking off their worries. They shouldn't do something so easy as to set up a box for babies to be dropped off. They should set up an agency where people who have really good valid reasons to give up the babies; then they'll take them.
But it would be hard to screen for valid reasons unless if based on economical status. It might prove dangerous to the child too if they have to pass a screening test. If the parents have to be "stuck" with the kid, they might abuse the child.
No, no.. they should go for the 'screening' test when the girl is pregnant; not after she gives birth. And valid reasons; they are many for example; the gal is too young to take care of her baby (not that hard to see) or the gal was a victim of rape/incest but doesn't wanna abort; or the gal just doesn't want a child yet but accidental pregnancy and doesn't wanna abort...--> This is similar to teenagers who got pregnant but the fact that it's not so convenient for them just to drop the babies off and they have to go for an embarrassing interview(s) would seem better to me.
^ hehehe, government should definitely hand out free condoms, probably save a lot of money in the end.
