Oh, very interesting thread, wanted to open a topic about the same too! I doubt I can speak Canto perfectly myself but at least I won't make the mistake pronouncing cow [ngoo] with [-ooh].
what about people like me, who are CBC's we can't help it if we dont know the different between "Mushroom" and "Innocent"
[Tung Koe] and [Moo koo] ? Or if the Mushroom is in Canto also [moo koo], then you'll have to make the meaning out of the whole sentence. 1. He's didn't kill her, he's [moo koe] 2. You need several ingredients for this dish: beef, chestnuts and [moo koe's]
:( I really don't see the difference...someone better show me a vid what the differences between a 'mushroom' and 'innocent' in Canto are...
Mushroom is "mor gu" (my cantonese pingyin sucks) while innocent is "mo gu"... So yeah, in fact they are not pronounced similarly @_@bbb
Let's see if I understand you all; the [moo] is pronounced shorter for the mushroom and longer for innocent?
@Tax: innocent is more like "mo (similar sound to the mo = none) gu" while mushroom is like "moor gu"... I can't really expain proper @_@b Sorry
3 part video about the history & evolution of Cantonese, very interesting. If you watch through the entire vid, you will see why Cantonese is the ORIGINAL ancient Chinese language, NOT mandarin. Many of the words we consider "slang" today were actually written & spoken in ancient times. It's just that mandarin speakers don't use those words in THEIR language; and as the adage goes, ignorance breeds contempt; so they dubbed those phrases as slang, and also never bothered to find out how it's written. Go Cantonese !
