@RIBS: I get totally aggrevated when people dub Mandarin as the more authetic and ancient language @_@bbb Because before Qin dynasty China does not have an official language per se... And us Southerners (aka Southern savages) did not went through the conversion to speak Mandarin when the language unification come along...

PS> Thanks for the new clips!!! Will watch when I get back home ;)

My mandarin is not that good. It is understandable but some of the tones are just wrong. My pinyin is actually excellent, it's just that my way of speaking has problems when I want to speak fast.

OMG, meeeee toooo !!! -bash I absolutely hate it when mainlanders dub all the canto movies & series into mandarin. First of all, they either over exagerate the emotions & inflections in their voices or they loose most of it into a bland sewage like exchange. To top it off, they looove to subtitle the scripts incorrectly, so that none of the subtitles match what the actors are saying. Why can't they just learn some freggin Cantonese like other mandarin speakers? Many Taiwanese who watch Canto stuff watch it in Canto and at least try to comprehend it...I give them props for trying.

And in addition to what you're saying, the government has always spoken a Cantonese based dialect. It wasn't until the late Ming dynasty (if I remember correctly) that they converted over to using Mandarin. Cantonese was still used in the government during the Tong & Soung Dynasties...

Let me know what you think of the clips :)

I'm really glad to see so many people are putting in the effort to learn Cantonese correctly. Our kids will benefit in the future learning "correct" Canto instead of the watered down lazy tongued version lol... Kudos for you -clapclap

But that's why the language gets so polluted. It's when people don't speak or use the language correctly, it just degenerates. It takes time and effort to learn Canto correctly. Otherwise, we can just say "f*ck it! I'll continue to speak with a lazy tongue since people can understand me anyway." It may be ok in our generation to do that, but it will impact future generations as each one compounds on our mistakes. Oh, if you read some books on the evolution of Mandarin & Cantonese, you'll find that Mandarin once had more than just 4 tones in ancient times, but because people got lazy, their language degenerated to the 4 tones that's left, and that affects how we speak, but I'll start another thread on that sometime later....

Well, in that case we can just remain in the level of babytalk. Why learn how to speak properly in ANY language at all? As long as it can be understood you said...

Cools, -clapclap -bigclap for your effort in saving Cantonese, one baby step at a time.

I detest people who speak sleezy or in lazy tongue (unless they have a medical reason for it), I get really mean and even though I won't repeat what they say to mock them, I insist that I DO NOT understand until they speak properly.

People get easily offended if I correct them (as I have like the shortest fuse imaginable and would retort to rolleye and such EASILY)

I've found that people who do want to learn how to pronounce correctly will change after you correct them once. People who are stubbornly hard headed will refuse to change the way they speak no matter how many times you correct them because they think they are right.

The most frustrating of all is not the general public who speaks it incorrectly. It's the government officials, TV news anchors, singers, bands, actors, and actresses who (I estimate about 90%) pronounce many words incorrectly leading to the general public to follow / imitate them, thinking, "oh, they're on TV so they must be pronouncing the words correctly." If we can get all public figures to correct themselves first, I'm sure most of the general public will follow suit.

    ^ OMG so right...

I hated it when the DJs and TV anchors don't say things properly!!! It's like poisoning the well, then people will pick up the wrong pronounce things properly and say "well I heard it on TV"

Hey! What's going on evil twin sista? lol

It's largely why I've stopped listening to new cantopop or watch any canto drama/movies. Just listening to people speak hurts my ears lol...

WORD... I cannot stand any of the new gen kids in films. I would need an interpretor to understand what Twins (or any number of them) say in a film @_@bbb

    It's just so upsetting.

So do you dig up old videotape series from the 80s that your parents taped, and watch those instead? I always get a blast watching the classic "Gum Yong" series =)

What do you watch instead? Or are you not a big TV fan? My current favs include Heroes, House, Scrubs, Smallville, Grey's Anatomy, and Boston Legal.

I follow House mostly, can't afford to follow too many series (though I also download Stargate Atlantis and have Battlestar Galactica on DVD...)

Chinese entertainment is very disheartening to me... I only see one film once in a while for a particular actor/direcitor I really like.
