FORT WORTH — Students who had been planning to walk across the stage at graduation ceremonies this weekend were instead walking a picket line Thursday morning. The Trimble Tech High School seniors marched in front of Fort Worth Independent School District headquarters to protest Wednesday's decision by trustees to bar students who failed the TAKS test from commencement exercises. About a dozen young people, carrying signs and chanting, began picketing at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. They represent the 613 Fort Worth seniors who did not pass the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills exam. Crystal Martinez complained that while she finished at the top of her class with a 3.5 grade point average, she is now blocked from graduation by failing the TAKS test. "We know we're not going to get our diplomas, but we just want to walk across the stage," Martinez said. "That's all we ask for right now." Judging by the photo id say these students deserve to fail and be barred from any future whatsoever. I understand mixing up 'there' and 'their' every once and a while... but mixing up 'our' and 'are' is almost beyond belief, considering that these are high school seniors.
really, if you're that dumb and can't pass an exam...a high school exam...then you shouldn't deserve to graduate.
She probably graduated out of a 4.0 scale which is roughly equal to a 85-90. Not bad, but not good either.
Haha...shinobi, me too. But for me to get a 3.5? dream on! What's the big deal about the TAKS test? WHy must you pass in order to graduate?
WTF. How do you get a 3.5 GPA average (about 90+ grade, A-) and fail those exams? The only explanation would be that the high school is incompetent and easy as hell. And with a GPA of 3.5.. I would at least expect her to continue to fight for her diploma.. but she speaks as if she only wants the "glory" to be able to walk across the stage, never minding the diploma.
^ yeah...i wouldn't care about walking across that stage. i'd rather just get the diploma. it's so embarassing ><;;
LMAO that picture.. haha "Let are kids walk" LOLLL!!!! Yeahhhh, you guys should definitely get to graduate!
that's why high school is lame... in high school, people can get away with 3.5-4.0GPAs with just doing all the work in class and failing most of the tests including a "final"... there's no way in hell u can say that in College/Uni... however in reverse... the best u can do is get a C by passing all ur tests with an A... totally lame... newayz... http://scotthochberg.com/taas.html that's the site with examples of previous tests... u fail those u really lose in life -.-...
That's bullshit. I don't know where you're basing your information from, but here high school grading is completely fair, the tests and final exam counted for most the grades. You won't get anywhere if you do all the work and fail all the exams. As for college, it really depends on the professor, in my opinion. I've been in college classes where if professors see a student putting in a huge effort but does poorly on the exams, he would be rewarded with at least a 3.0 or above.
WTF 3.5 in high school considered "top of the class ?!?!?!" Must be a pretty ghetto school then. The valedictorian at my school graduated with 4.91 GPA. It's a big deal to pass the TAKS exam because it is standardized against ALL students in Texas; It's to prevent one school from being deficient in teaching the basic core requirements and"dumbing down" their class exams so everyone passes. So basically, these kids are all deficient in their academics and need to repeat the 12th grade....lol IB n*gas pullin the race card next .....
i dunno whether i consider myself lucky or not to have gone to 3 high schools in two different states... most classes would have tests/quizzes/exams be worth 10-15% of the grade... the rest was hw/classparticipation/etc... I can't say all high school classes are like that, just from my experience... I've had a few good teachers though, but the majority were hired to get higher scores out of the kids rather than actually teach anything... and for college, unless its a class heavy with essays or labs, i've never seen any class that rewards students for just doing hw/participation/etc and doing poorly on tests...
It's factors like these that give kids 3.5 GPA's and still manage to fail the state standardized examinations. It's completely illogical to count participation and classwork for the majority of the grade. Tests and exams are what really shows who knows what (or who doesn't know what, for that matter). Anyway, over here.. it would be BIZARRE to hear of anyone who does not graduate because he/she failed the state exam.. it just doesn't happen.
...Sheeeesh you still want to show your face after you've failed some big exam such as TAKS??? Whatever TAKS is...
Hmmm...in that case, if TAKS is a standardized exam, then their high school must be pretty incompetent to have a student with a 3.5gpa and fail the test
