China does has great influences on Vietnam due to over 1000 years of atempting to make Vietnam as a part of Great China. Vietnam does has her own language and unique culture with a sense of self independence..as she fought the Chinese, Mongolians, Spanish, French, and other invaders to maintain those values. But Vietnam and China do share the same root? Are we the same to one and another? No, I dun think so...

    Long Time ago

Long time ago when the Viets were around, China was not yet in existence! No China means no Chinese. I mean the Dong Son Culture that existed 1000 BC. Likewise lots of difference tribes were around during the bronze age in areas later became to be known as Middle Kingdom and subsequently became unified after extermination of all the cultures and languages by the despotic First Emperor (220 BC). Evolution tends to suggest that there is divergence of culture and bio-diversity, as nature intends it to be. However human thoughts oftens erroneously think that a dominant or most populous race is the origin of almost everything else! For example if Germany won the WW2 then over time people would speak mostly German and then people would suggest the German and all other European people were one (especially hypothetically if the Germans produced a master race and most of the the undesirables were gased and all other languages destroyed. )
One must also add that because of plenty of inter-marriage then alot of people are neither pure Han nor Viet anyway.
