well anyways....was chilling out with some friends at wonderland and my friend started bitching about the taiwan-china issue. well, i started thinking more about it. personally i dont really care what happens but it's been going on for a great deal of time already and i'd really like to see a decision made. Ive heard both sides of the arguments from mainland and taiwanese friends. However, im leaning towards the china side because the argument that always pops up wen my taiwanese talk about it is that the fact that they just dont think that china iis as civilized as they are, and they do not want to be associated with them. Now, mi sure there are some degree of this there, but this happens in every other country as well. I just think that it is kind of wrong to automatically stereotype the whole country like that. I am neither taiwanese or mainland chinese so the result does not affect me, but i think it is disgusting when patriotism is taken this far. .
they all started out friends, lol now they hate each other and now this...-___-, but china can go and..........itself i love my taiwanese people, and i consider HK separate from china too, so GO taiwan! =)
Well, the thing about China is that it got authoritarian over everything. Taiwan is founded because people ran from China in fear of its control and ruthless handling of the rebels... And also? China demonize EVERYTHING the Taiwanese does is just revolting... Not a fan of that political model AT ALL.
i think Taiwan is an independent nation outside of China. They have been governing themselves, build up their economy, and with no agreement that they will return to China. Having said that, I do agree HK is part of China ... mainly because they had an agreement and Honkies knew that day was coming.
as i said in an earlier post: (in business terminology): I prefer a merger on equal footing...instead of an enemy takeover.... pros: I like the portret of Mr. Sun (founder of modern day china) back on the Tiananmen square and other places instead of mao's. China's parliament gets more parties ..instead of of the de-facto single party rule it now has... it should stabelize east-asia...(no cross-strait tensions) cons: non...so u see any.. =P (TW could continue the enjoy autonomy it has now)
the cross straits tensions... china - taiwan china views taiwan as part of china...just another province. taiwan wants independence... or something like that.... try watching the news..or read this wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_status_of_Taiwan
^ efff thiss....china is a country...taiwan is a country...and HONG KONG is a country...y can't they live with that????????
The pros are indeed very advantageous... IF they happens. But that is a huge IF because I sincerely doubt that Mr. Sun's statue or portrait will be anywhere near Tiananmen Square, even less likely to be comparable (or replacing) Mao. China will NOT have more political parties, because with more parties the political situation will be in more tension, which benefits NONE of the parties involved... As for CONS, I think it is understandable that Taiwanese people think China will oppress them politically and may affect their living standard negatively... Because it IS going to happen (IF the two unifies). Because Hong Kong in fact is NOT a country?
taiwan IS PART OF CHINA...cept they want independance but we wont give them independance without a fight....this is because US wants Taiwan to be indepent becuase the power that China holds would b weaker...thats y US is helping taiwan
well if taiwan didnt think of themselves as some independant country or if china didnt think taiwan was part of them THEN THERE WOULDNT EVEN BE A SITUATION!
Well, on the other hand, at the moment, US is sitting on the wall, ready to help whichever side... the so-called mediator whose interest lies in nothing but his own... Well, why did China consider Taiwan part of China? They don't speak the same language (or at least, they don't call the same language by the same name), they don't use the same character systems, they don't have the same culture etc etc... Why would one think Taiwan is part of China? China did nothing but oppression to those who founded Taiwan, it was a desperate measure, to have founded Taiwan, start a safe haven of their own...
Taiwan might as well be its own country. It has its own government, its own democratic elections, it's own currency, etc. Honestly, the only thing that doesn't make it a part of China is the fact that China keeps claiming it as a renegade province.
^ The bolded democratic in democratic election process is very aptly bolded... -^_^ It is SUCH a huge difference between democratic and... well, non-democratic to say the least... -whistle
yeah...it may not be reasonable in the near short term.........but u never know... I think it won't increase tension very much in modern days, it isn't like when those parties had their own armies like in the past.... Mr. Sun was after all, China's first president!! I don't think a Unification will neccesarily affect their living standards negatively.... first: tw is bigger than a country like NL.....its international position is way behind....its international status even lags that of HK, with now part of China... taiwan foreign affairs office is a JOKE...its government is recognised by lik 23 countries.... last month...one little country severed its ties with tw....its foreign minister? resigned for his faillure<_< then... and then the part of travel convience....where can u go with a tw passport....recognized by 20+ countries...and visa everywhere....>>look at the status of similar countries...or even HK....I know some taiwanse people here in Holland, they know travel convience isn't great....(ok...chinese ordinary passport isn't really great, but at least its officially recognized and offers basic consular protectoin) the consequences on the economic part aren't sure..i think there could be a surge in china-tw economic cross relations.... less chaos, if u see how the taiwan index reacts on every tiny political incidicent..(elections, chinese army movements and so on...) not really a stable investing enviroment... further no defense budget means, less tax-burden on taiwanese people... euhm...democratic in asia isn't what we are used to in western countries.... U must see how much violence they use in parliaments....very shocking and sometimes life endangering business..voting in parliament... the kaoshiung mayor election(of a half year ago) were declared null and void during its first appeal, because of misdoing by the winner during its election campaing... source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_asiapacific/view/282544/1/.html
Every trading relationship with China consist of a agreement that Taiwan is not accepted as a own country and nation. Just because of the historical background Taiwan want to be a independent country and nation.
But somehow I seldom hear Chinese people (people from China, not Taiwanese) talk about Mr. Sun... It is as if they don't know such historical figure, which is kind of surprising considering he WAS the first president of China... Nearly everyone know about Mao and his little red book, but Mr. Sun do not enjoy the same popularity (or celebrity) in China... I am not refuting the validity of this argument, just curious about a finer points, the international position (or the lack of) of Taiwan could be a result of Trade agreements made between foreign countries and China? Not to mention I suspect NL is founded longer than TW... I do understand in fact that unification could lead to a more stable economy for both China and TW (with the resolved tension), however, I am highly concerned of the policy China will enforce on TW, since it insists that TW is a province, so unlike HKSAR or MCSAR (Macau?) I doubt that TW will enjoy the pseudo-independence HK and MC is having right now. Ah, so it's true... But then again, I found China quite anal at times about the issue. I thought they EXILED those people off to TW when it was first founded (otherwise, China could have just wipe them out there and then, instead of having this glued situation for decades...) I mean, why wait until they have established an independent country (or sorts) while barking for unification? They could have EASILY resorb all those runaways... But no, they decided to leave them and come back later...
Based on the economic power of TW, it could have established itself as a growth market, but it didn't....there were years of economic downturn(u could say thats because chinese policies) but there are also many (unaffected by china's policies) trade relations between TW and foreign countries...almost every country has got somekind of a representative office in taiwan... examples: I can mention TW policies on direct (flight) links to China... (its still not possible execpt for chinese newyear) policies restricting investments in china and visa versa... restrictions on FDI...monetary reforms....economic reforms, seems everything is going on a very slow pace... (HSBC is waiting for the outcomes of the reforms, and therefor waiting with investing in TW) somehow, i think TW is hampering its own economic growth somehow....and thus its global influence if china wasn't growing in importance like now, what would be it international influence now?? china does insists TW is just a province....but china is more afraid for losing sovereignty over the 'area' than really have to administer it...(i think) wan't there a proposal to taiwan? china would use the one-country two systems as guideline... So it would establish another SAR....even letting TW keep its own militairy apparatus intact...(so its says in it white papers and proposals) tw would(according to those papers) just have to give up its claims on being the 'real' China. but how it will happen, and if china could adher itself to that commitment.. thats another story... but international pressure could help...
