In a shocking story from Tamil Nadu, a 15-year-old reportedly performed a Caesarian delivery to get his name into the record books. The Rural Development Officer (RDO) today visited the Trichy hospital where the surgery was performed, questioning the boy’s parents who are both doctors there. This is after the Trichy collector ordered an inquiry into the operation.

Trichy's collector Ashish Vachchani said that if the incident is true it amounts to endangering life and action will be taken.

“We have ordered a probe based on media reports. If the incident is true it amounts to endangering human life. We will act according to law,” he said to TIMES NOW today (June 21).

Trichy doc sings a different tune

The Indian Medical Association’s (IMA) state unit sought an explanation from Dr Murugesan the father of Dileep Raj, the teenager who allegedly performed the operation. In reply, Murugesan has now stated that the surgery was performed by himself, while his son ''just watched it out of curiosity''.

However according to local IMA members, Murugesan himself, first disclosed his son’s feat during an IMA meeting.

The IMA has recommended to the Indian Medical Council that Murugesan be debarred.

IMA Pres: Murugesan committed a crime

Speaking to TIMES NOW, IMA President Ajay Kumar said any doctor who encouraged an unqualified person to perform a medical operation had crossed the line. “This is totally illegal, as well as unethical. If it is illegal the IMA has nothing to do with it and it is up to the law to take cognisance of the offence and take action. If need be, the local IMA members can be witnesses,” said IMA President Ajay Kumar today.

How far will you go for a world record?

While the medical fraternity mulls over what action to take against Dileep’s doctor parents - who encouraged the operation there are concerns being raised over the extent to which people should be allowed to go, in pursuit of records.

First there was Budhiya, the prodigious long-distance wonder kid who undertook many feats that even adults cringe at attempting, to enter the record books. Three-year-old Kethresh’s father's desire to see his young son create a world record saw him take to the wheels of the car much before he learns to even read and write the alphabet. Next, a young boy from Tamil Nadu, Sathiswaran, ended his life after money constraints put paid to his dream to enter the Limca book of records.

And now, adding to this slowly growing and bizarre list, is the shocking story of Dileep Raj, a fifteen-year-old whose obsession to perform a unique feat saw him put the life of a young mother and her unborn child at risk.

Violating his oath?

Dileep Raj, the son of two doctors from Trichy performed a Casearean operation allegedly in the presence of his doting parents at a clinic. Though the mother and child are said to be safe, the operation that came to light on May 6 has left the medical fraternity in the state shell-shocked, especially since Dileep’s father - a Dr Murugesan - is a general surgeon and was the anesthetist during the procedure.

“What he has done, as far as the Indian Medical Association of Manapparai is concerned, is ethically wrong. We have sent the matter to Ravishankar who is our state secretary, and this matter has now been referred to the Ethics Committee of the state IMA. Now the state IMA is going to take some action against him,” said Dr Maheshwaran, Joint Secretary of the IMA in Manappari (Tiruchirapalli district).

Arrogant defiance

Reportedly Dr Murugesan had proudly displayed a CD recording of the operation at a meeting of the local IMA in Manapparai. According to the letter of complaint forwarded to the state IMA council, “When the feelings of the local members was conveyed Dr Murugesan reacted arrogantly and threatened to sue the local IMA without understanding and accepting his mistake. He justified his mistake and conveyed his non-regrets to IMA.” Murugesh reportedly justified the surgery claiming that if a 10-year-old could drive a car, there was nothing wrong with his son performing a surgery.

Maheshwaran said to TIMES NOW, “The Medical Council of India can take suo moto action in this, there is no need to wait for a complaint. We are expecting it."

Since the media reported this story, however, Dileep’s parents have modified their stance claiming that the boy was merely observing the surgery “out of curiosity”. The CD which is believed to have recorded the entire operation is also untraceable, and the doctor has refused to comment on camera.

Earlier in 2006 too, doctors in Tamil Nadu were shocked when in an attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records, a Chennai-based doctor performed 50 hernia operations in a day. While he had claimed this was a display of the skill of Indian surgeons, there were several questions raised over whether he should have been allowed to put the lives of his patients in jeopardy.

A question of medical ethics

Should the lives of patients be allowed to be risked by publicity hungry record-seeking doctors? In the case of Dileep, the fate of a mother and her unborn child were in the hands of an unskilled teenager whose only credentials were that he was the son of two qualified doctors.

In the quest for records, it appears, ethics and even threat to human lives seems trivial. The question is, where does one draw the line?

Unless the 15 year old is a truly gifted boy with an IQ of 130 and have studied and got the official qualifications to perform a Ceasarian Delivery it would otherwise not ok to do this kind of thing. The father is just an arrogance ass who thinks he can afford to risk other people's lives for a mention in the Guiness Book of Records. Not only won't they get a mention, he probably risk losing his doctors license.

^ I hope he does lose his license, that is absolutely inappropriate and demented. If anything had gone wrong, that would have been a life or both lives could have been lost. He should go to jail for that.
