not when you have tariffs.. if you have any friends in hk/taiwan, ask them how much lv costs.. like a specific item, and then look it up for america.. price is different
Generally the prices doesn't reflect the fluctuation of the exchange rate... Consider: H&M wouldn't raise the price of a staple tank just because HKD just up'd so and so perfect because it is impossible to follow the exchange rate closely. So they usually use an arbitrary (but competitive) exchange rate to determine the price, then they just have to suck up whatever fluctuations in exchange rate...
Look at the following survey will give you some ideas: http://www.mercerhr.com/knowledgecenter/reportsummary.jhtml/dynamic/idContent/1095320#top50 HK is ranking 5th on this list. The first US city is NYC on 15th
Since the statistics considered includes housing, I am not surprised... Housing in Hong Kong is SUPER expensive relative to what people earn... =_=bbb So some things need to be cheap (or at least cheaper), otherwise many Hong Konger will end up homeless =_=b
In exchange, you get the one of the best transit network in the world due to the high population density... In a few years, the MTR is going to have a stop every 100m practically ANYWHERE in Hong Kong and Kowloon (New Territories is the turf of KTR, so no promises there -tongue2)
funny you just posted that site.. i was talking with one of my colleagues about these results and how american gov rules the nation.. we finally decide to move to canada after we tire of living in america haahaha
im sure i've seen a gucci store in HK, and then there were stores like louis viuttton (dunno spelling), last call, those really high end ones
There's a Gucci store inside (kind of) Lane Crawford in Times Square. Louis Vuitton flagship in Hong Kong is either on Peking road in TST or in Central around Pacific Place (not sure what the building's called properly, but it's pinyin is Tai Zhi Hong)...
TST has Prada, Gucci, Cartier, LV, Boss, Chanel, Burberry, Hermes and way too many that i cant keep tracks all very close to each other.
well.. i think if you want to buy the newest gadgets made in Japan or Korea (Cellphones, MP3 etc) then i think HK is cheaper.... i also find brands such as LV and Gucci are cheaper in HK too... but then if you want to buy US brands such as A&E, Coach, Tommy Hilfiger etc., then North America is cheaper.... That's how i buy my stuff
Once it hits further sales in January, HK is quite cheap. However, if it's original price, i think it would be similar to other places.
clothing is about the same in the states and HK. Food i feel is cheaper than in the states...a mcdonalds soft serve is $2HKD = $.25USD, and you can't forget the cheap food at the cha can teng. Electronics on the other hand are more expensive in HK than they are in the states, and well you can't really compare cell phones since we can't get most of the phones that you can get in hong kong. the land/rent prices are similar to probalby prices in san fran or new york if not more, but people their make less than an average work in the states the exchange rate makes us people from the states feell ike the stuff in HK is cheaper because our money can buy more things, its like back in the 1930 when you could buy a burger for $.10 and now u can't even buy anything for $.10
