More of a mind game thing. Sometimes when a girl tries to leave a guy who abuse and manipulate her, the guy would come up with some sorry sad excuse for their misbehavior. On their knees, begging, flowers, or promise "I'll never do it again". They give in, but then the cycle goes on and on. Personally, I believe that if someone truly loves you, they wouldn't do that.
