Why not try to make up a story about a girl friend of yours liking a guy? Or a guy liking a girl.. That kind of topic.. then you slowly go into the topic and then ask him naturally, "Hmm, so how about you? You have anyone in mind at the moment?" Topics like these could easily get the guy to open up. As for hints on his part, watch out for clues that he's being out of his way to be extra nice to you... things that he wouldn't normally do for just a 'normal' girl friend.
