Japan’s unique square watermelons ready for summer time If you’re visiting a Japanese friend’s home this summer for a meal, you will be served fruit and most likely a very refreshing watermelon which is a typical summer fruit. Watermelons are not really expensive unless they are specially grown and wrapped as gift items. Twenty years ago, a farmer from Zentsuji in Kagawa prefecture grew the first square shaped watermelon. These watermelons were grown in cube shaped glass containers while still on the vine and the square boxes are the exact dimensions of Japanese refrigerators, allowing full-grown watermelons to fit conveniently and precisely onto refrigerator shelves. The cost for this convenience is retail of 13,000-15,000 Yen!
^ nope sorry....cant find it on youtube....but its the episode when family goes to japan and homer blows like a lot of money on the square melon and then like 5 seconds later walking away from the melon stand the melon just fops back out to be a regular round melon......i htink its the episode where they dont have any money left to get home and then they go on a game show to try and win air tickets home......
whoa.. haha homer -lol but yes those watermelons look great -lol.. wish i had one.. but 13000 yen? is that alot? how much is that in USD? or AUD?
i think about USD120 / AUD140. which i believe it's very expensive. nah ... i'll just get a regular watermelon for USD5 and cut it up!
Seen this on tv before. Interesting that they came up with modifying the shape of fruits. Maybe I should try to grow my own star shape watermelon and make fortunes off of it XD
Heh, they look cute.-smileb It's rather useless though, and uber expensive. Also, this is more for display. And other than the one time tasting, its novelty will be already gone. Save your money, buy a waxed one instead, keke.
^yeah it would probably taste te same, the only advantage of a square water melon is maybe the fact it won't roll away so easily hehe. And fruit is already so expensive in that country, not going to pay extra for a watermelon hype if there's no taste difference. -rolleyes
^? -huh what are you talking about? Have you checked the title of this thread? Oh erm, well I did buy 1 HUGE Fuji apple and it was relly worth the money; so crunchy, very juicy and sweet 'n sour. -blush2 It looks like a regular apple in this pic but it was very difficult to fit in my hand as my hands were too small for it and it was more than enough as breakfast. Was as big as a baby's head!
If women just think the same about luxury goods -bigsmile But no, a LV bag and another LV bag is not the same ... according to them -bigsmile For men, ... a bag is just a bag -evil She: Oh ... how adorable shoes ... He: But you already wearing a pair and not to mention the dozens of shows at home -evil @Brain: Is your avvy, Mrs Smith? Parasite Eve? Or whatsamacallit?
Well there IS a difference between perishable and non-perishable items... -whistle My avvy (ATM, right now, 5.54PM, Friday, July 13th) is Ada from RE.
