Thanks for the back up bbear Way to rep us 05s I just read the forums a lot more than reply with comments now a days. I make stupid comments once in a while, but that's a rarity now. You guys makes comments so fast anyways, haha. Too bad there's not a counter on how much a user reads. Until we have a discussion on what "contribution" is, I would say I contribute enough. As I honestly don't believe post counts and thanks alone are good measurements, though I can see them as very very rough estimates.

Oh but I do find it funny, I would have even given you a high five if this conversation was in person. I did notice the open-ended comment you left previously actually, that's why I said 'if". Truth is, I wouldn't know if I would be leaving that comment because I'm not in that position (and I would be hypocritical to assume one way or another), but it does not make what I said earlier anymore or less valid. I've been visiting this site regularly ever since I've joined. If I had made a reply to every single thread I read regardless of content, I would (without a doubt) have thousands of posts credited to me by now. I make an active choice not to comment a lot because I tend to prefer posting comments where I feel my words have value. This is not to say high post count users don't bring value (and everyone has different standards for "value" anyways), I am saying that it does not rule people with low post counts out either. Because of my decision, does that mean I'm not contributing at all? Or am I actually contributing by not requiring visitors to read my potentially meaningless comment? Is there value to my messages if my motive was to simply raise my post count?
Of course there's no value if your motive is to simply raise your post count... I am not saying you should do it, in fact, I hate spammers. But anyone can easily say, 'Oh I don't post a lot because I don't have any meaningful comments to make... ' there's a thin line drawn between that used as an excuse or as a valid justification, that's all I am saying. As for which is which, only God knows... haha. You can still be deemed a valid contributor if you spent ur time reading posts by others and make a post, only when you have some 'meaningful comment'. I didn't say YOU in particular, didn't contribute anything, in fact I think I made that clear enough in my earlier post, saying I am not pointing finger at anyone. But there's also a difference between someone who does actually contribute and some guy who just signed up early, but doesn't make any contribution. Just as the way you said high posts count don't mean much, the date one signs up doesn't mean much either.. One can easily sign up in 05 or 06 but the amount of contribution that person made compared to someone who just signed up in 07 recently can be much lesser. My idea of a 'noob' is more like someone who doesn't contribute much, not the date he/she joined. To me, a person can be labelled a noob even if he/she signed up much earlier as long as he/she doesn't have any significant contribution.

Alright, it looks as if we're pointing out very different things here. 1) Post Counts 2) Date of membership So In response to your date membership point... Yes I agree. I realize you're saying that you're not attacking me personally, but just to state again (since you made a response to my original comment), my words were "long term commitment". A person who signs up long ago would fit the "long term" part, and not the "commitment" part. Lastly, with comments such as "I can see that coming from someone who doesn't have a lot of posts count and thanks too." and "You wouldn't be saying that in the case if u haf a lot of posts count and thanks would you? -rolleyes", I felt that these comments may have implied meanings towards my situation which prompted my responses. I know too many acquaintances in my life that leave open-ends when they are clearly directing it at someone specific, so I may have become a little overly sensitive to wording and emoticons as a result in open-ended comments.

My initial response was to that sentence actually, about the 'long term commitment' thingy. Now that you have clarified that, I am ok with it. Of course, posts count don't mean contribution, likewise, lack of posts count don't mean you only contribute meaningful posts either. So in any case, it would all boil down to each individual whether they did really contribute or not. And to conclude: 1. Join date doesn't mean you can be deemed a valuable contributor to the forum 2. Posts count doesn't mean you can be deemed a valuable contributor to the forum either, but may be a rough estimate.
and now we get into a lengthy discussion on what makes a member a true member...here we go.. and just to add. avant is a member that has made some pretty helpful and productive posts. he may not be posting regularly, but when he first started, his posts were helpful to whatever context or discussion he was in. he has also contributed to the former layout we had by making the winning banner that was used.
