I hate - well not "hate," just "greatly dislike" - people who don't like music sung in other languages just because they don't understand it. to me, that's just so freaking shallow. I know way too many cantonese people in the real world who are like "oh I don't like listening to mandopop because I don't understand it." well, I don't understand korean or japanese either! and I still listen to english <_<, cantonese, mandarin, korean, and japanese, and base what I like on how good it sounds. I honestly don't care if I don't understand, but it really irks me whenever people are turned off just because it's in "another language." it's a shame in this respect that a lot of asian artists don't bother crossing over, either because: 1) they want to continue pwning whatever area they were in 2) people in the u.s. don't listen to any language except for english. and maybe spanish. there was an article in the guardian about how spanish/latin artists don't bother going to the u.s. because of the whole language thing. then again, even for PA radio, numbers drop whenever a mandarin/korean/japanese song is being played. hmmm...
I can understand where some of them are coming from. Lyrics are important in making most songs. So they probably just want a song they can relate to in some way.
Doesn't really bother me if they prefer not to listen to stuff they don't understand. Like mentioned some prefer lyrics they can relate to. They only thing that bothers me is when people say they don't listen to a certain type of music because they hate a certain race (sadly I know some). Even if I don't understand a certain language, I enjoy the vocal and beats.
Sometimes it's frustrating because you don't understand the lyrics because of language. But what good is a song if you can't understand it? They could try listening by feeling the emotion the singer expresses in their songs.
ask mozart. those songs had no lyrics. and songs are perfectly fine if you can't understand it, because there's going to be a meaning behind it. it just depends if you're willing to be open enough to learn what that meaning is (i.e. actively learning the language instead of just saying "oh well, not my language, next.")
im open to any music...just as long as its got a good tune for me.....ive moved into mando. j-pop and k-pop.....
Lol you can't expect someone to learn a language just for the music..... If I were in their position I wouldn't want to learn a whole new language just because it has some good music....
people probably wants to listen to music that they can establish a connection to and to do that they'll probably have to know what the song means or what's it about, and for the crossover thing, well usually songs sound better if the artist is singing in their native or fluent language, better than being force to sing a song in another language and the song is confusing and meaningless, also they lose their originality in a way...
haha. i'm like the other way around. i hardly listen to cantopop. mainly cause i think hk music is just crap. i cringe listening to canto rap but like mando pop cause i don't understand it.
Well there's gotta be some type of music you don't like lol, like german, turkish, italian, french, whatever....... it's not like you gonna like every type of music in the world..........people in the u.s. want to probably listen to music of their nationality and stuff like that, you probably don't listen to middle-eastern music and all that, am i right? everybody have different musical tastes and they probably don't like their music so exotic, i mean i listen to asian music and english that's it, that's because i am part of the asian race and live in america, other americans consider asian music too exotic for them and they probably get turned off by it. I personally find things like french rap and all that stuff funny lols, americans probably listen to asian music and think it's a rip off of their culture and find it funny, everyone's opinion on music is different, it's not like we should force everyone into developing a universal taste for music.
middle eastern music gives me a headache. and why is the female singer's voices always so screechy and high?

lol nobody could really rap in canto cause it's hard, couldn't really make a flow, edison sucked at it, jin rapped in canto but he made it funny so it's listenable, cantopop was good back then though, like sam hui, that shit was awesome.

twins...........oh no lol, couldn't stand their shit, too kiddish most of the time lols. but yes, cantopop is slowly dying and mandarin pop is taking over and i'm feeling sad.......cause i can't understand mandarin at all and i listened to cantopop growing up. Hopefully some artists would save it and it won't be buried completely but the successful cantopop singers usually turn to sing for mando audiences to get better record sales, that's just the way it is nowadays.

lol....but it's not like i completely hate hk music now though, there are still some new artists i listen to........janice and kary ng, and that new eric suen album's pretty hot....but otherwise i will follow your lead and bump some sam hui music ha...
well i think lyrics are really important. if you've got a good melody happening but you don't have any lyrics... kinda dodgy. but like... no offence but western music and cantopop have totally gone to trash recently and jpop is just mainstream pop culture now. now i mostly only listen to mandopop (leehom -inlove) but that doesn't mean I don't like kpop. it's just i don't understand it lol. (not saying i hate kpop)
