July 20, 2007 - South African filmmaker Gavin Hood, best known for winning the Foreign Language Film Oscar for 2005's Tsotsi, has been picked to direct the forthcoming X-Men spin-off, Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman. Today's Variety reports that Hood was chosen from a field of several hot directors, but adds that Fox was won over by his new film, Rendition, starring Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhaal, Meryl Streep and Peter Sarsgaard. Underworld helmer Len Wiseman, and Disturbia director D.J. Caruso had been rumored as front-runners. Wolverine is set to start shooting in November with a 2008 release planned. Lauren Shuler-Donner is producing along with Hugh Jackman and John Palmermo through their production company, Seed Prods. "I have long been a fan of Gavin's work and know he will make a masterful film with the character intensity and action beats the fans expect," Jackman told the trade. Hood will helm from a script written by David Benioff. Variety scoops that Wolverine will tell Logan's origin story by mixing elements from established Marvel Comics along with Frank Miller's more recent graphic novels, Weapon X.
