the best way is to ask another person =P, jks XD I would try to go to those technology place and ask if they have a portable chinese dictionary. I don't know if it exists or not, but go ahead and try. I don't see why they have a portable english dictionary but not a portable chinese dictionary.
As for portable electronic Cantonese dictionaries, your best bet would be to get it from Hong Kong. As for PC, I'm also looking for one that pronounces it out as well. If you're not too worried about it pronouncing it out loud then there is a programme called Wenlin 文林. You can search a Chinese word by writing it out, typing the English, typing the Mandarin Pinyin if you know it or copy and paste the Chinese character. What it can do also is pronounce the word out in Mandarin but only gives the written pronounciation for Cantonese. Check it out. It maybe useful to you anyway since I saw your other post about learning Mandarin as well.
watch more mtvs and start learning from there...........but it still hasnt worked for me......... i know they used to have a pen for english but not sure about chinese
i got an electronic canto/mando chinese dictionary from HK, you can type in english to get the chinese handwrite the chinese characters in to get the english and then it will show you the written pinyin (mando), but you can have it speak the mando and canto pronunciation you can get them in any big electronics shops in HK, but they are costly, think mine cost HK$1000+ they got colour screens and all sorts these days
http://www.kawa.net/works/cantonese/canton.html this site will convert canto/manarin into yale/pinyin
well my uncle lerned to liek write chinese thru internet altho i duno the site u can serch it on go0ogle
Hey, thanks for the site! Actually, I know of another one too. I posted this link in one of my other threads a few days ago, but I'll post it again especially for this particular thread: http://www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk/dictionary/parser/ This is called the CantoDict Parser and it translates Chinese characters into both Cantonese and Mandarin pinyin/romanization, and it also gives you the English translation. I find it convenient when you can just hover your mouse pointer over the characters and there will be a mini pop-up that displays the character(s), the pinyin, and the translation. But this one is based on Jyutping romanization which you would have to familiarize yourself with if you use this online tool pretty often. For example, if you enter the word 人 which means "person/people," the way you would normally pronounce it is "yun" (in Cantonese), but with Jyutping, it's written as "jan." So it'll take a bit of getting used to. (You can test this tool by copying and pasting my signature into the parser.)
yeh the interface is in english, you can translate chinese to english or english to chinese heres some pics
you know those new mouse pad writters i've seen them popping up around a lot of places in canada and the US it's for people who dont know how to type chinese, but know how to write chinese instead of learning a new key system, they can write the characters on this device that kinda works like a computer mouse but you are given a pen (like a watcom tablet) anyways some of the newer software that comes with it has an optino to turn on audio which it will read the character out loud in mandarin or cantonese no pin yin option though
omg dimsum... i have the exact same dict... also got it when I went back to HK... I got it for 2400HKD from broadway (百老匯) hehehe of course, this was 2 years ago some of my friends dictionaries have color and all sorts of crazy things... but this one is not bad
snap! i think mine was like HK$1500, but im not sure since i didnt buy it myself yeh the new ones look almost like PDAs these days, but the old ones are still good as long as it gets the job done, which it does -^_^
So u can handwrite the chinese onto the screen? and it will give you: english, pingyin and audio in canto n mando?
yep you write in chinese into the screen, if it recognises it, it will give you the english meaning, pingyin and audio in mando or canto or english
I don't use the handheld dictionary much anymore because it eats up too many batteries (4AAA!). Now I just go online and use online dictionaries. The handheld is handy when I'm not near a computer. I find that it doesn't have as many 'slangs' and 'modern' words as say - Sheik's Canto webpage (refer to earlier post, I think someone posted a link). Nonetheless, it is a good solid dictionary.
Haha, yeah...Sheik's Canto website is the BEST!! I use it all the time to improve upon my Cantonese. That site is very helpful, and I've learned to read and write a bit of Chinese with it too! -^_^
