The Chinese government says it is drafting new laws to tackle the growing gender imbalance caused by the widespread abortion of female foetuses.

The practice is already banned, but new rules are expected to set out specific punishments for parents and doctors.

China's Family Planning Association (CFPC) has revealed the extent of the imbalance - in one city there are eight young boys for every five girls.

Experts fear the phenomenon could have unpredictable social consequences.

Some believe that with millions of men unable to find a wife, there could be risks of increasing anti-social and violent behaviour.

    Boys preferred

China's one-child policy, and a traditional preference for male heirs, has led many couples to try to ensure that their single offspring is a boy.

Some pay for illegal ultrasound tests to discover the sex of a foetus, and abort it if it is female.

"The root cause is traditional thinking that boys are better than girls, especially in poverty-stricken areas," Song Jiang, a population expert at Beijing's Renmin University, told the Xinhua news agency.

"Those people expect boys to support the family."

On Friday it was revealed that the eastern city of Lianyungang had the most skewed population. Among children under four years old, there are 163.5 boys for every 100 girls.

Ninety-nine cities had gender ratios higher than 125, state-run news agency Xinhua quoted the CFPA as saying in a report.

The UN recommends a gender ratio of no more than 107.

But they're a bit too late with the new measures now as a whole generation of men won't succeed finding a wife. New export product from China: order a groom for westerners...

This is really sad to read about, but at the end it's was bound to happen. It's simple logic...

Government enforced 1 child per couple + Boys are best (to carry on the family name) attitude + wonders of modern technology (scan for gender, press delete if not the one you want) = more boys than girls.

I have also heard that due to the gender imbalance there is also an increased instance of "power gamers" * and "gold farmers" **, as a generation of guys have no ladies to go out with....

    * &** - Disclaimer: - may not actually be true....but need to lighten this up too depressing to think about.

Well on the bright side at least the population in China is still going up...I read some stats about population growth in most modern cities was actually becoming negative...as people are living way longer then they did before and other people choose to have kids later in life or not to have them at all...but that's a whole other topic....

This is a chart from the same website, the caption says "China's Total Population & Female Minus Male Population by Age, Census 1990" and you can see that there is a surplus of male.

Although for the record, I found this website a bit sketchy since they lack a unit on their charts (is those numbers hundreds, thousands, millions or what?).

Without an appropriate unit, it is impossbile to say whether the difference is "a little less" or if such impression stem from a data manipulation.

yeh they should definitely make a law to execute the doctors who done the abortion
and the parents who leave the daughters

i remember there was a case where they find some dead baby girl in shoebox
    how inhumane

Many times it is not DOCTORS who perform those abortions, it can be performed very crudely with a wire hanger (if the fetus is young enough) which can result in massive bleeding and death of the mother.

I start to suspect the imbalance can be an indirect result of bad abortion practices since many mothers died during the abortion...

My mongolian friend told me that there are a shortage of men in Mongolia especially in cities. She said the men from Cihna should get married to the women in Mongolia to solve the gender iimbalance in both countries. Also the female to male ratio in the capitol was about 3:1 a few months ago.
