even when flying with singapore airlines i sometimes dont understand what the captains say =/

  3. LOL that man gets annoyed but you cant blame him in a high stress job, plus that pilot should have good English if he is gona fly in an English speaking country with a plane full of lives in his hands.

This is exactly why I've sworn to myself never get on a chinese plane (except for Cathay) as their pilots English sucks big time. Seen one of those docs about the enormous economy expansion of China and they need more pilots to fly the planes from and to China but most of them barely manage the basics of flying not to mention to manage another language.

I understand why the traffic controller sounds pissed though...there are more planes waiting to take off/landing and thanks to this one chinese pilot who can't communicate in English there's a delay for all.

I can't even begin to grasp the reason why China would even allow pilots who do not understand simple English to fly to an English speaking country. It's ridiculous.

What about the vice versa -- when flying to China, are the pilots usually Chinese or not Chinese? If they're not Chinese, do the traffic controllers speak to the pilot in Chinese or English? In other words, would a situation like this happen in China where the Chinese traffic controllers get pissed off because the pilot cannot understand it?

I fly quite a bit for work within the United States and when the pilots come on to make their announcements, I never had an instance when I had trouble understanding what they're saying. Hearing something like this for an international flight is just not good. I wonder how often this happens and if it happens with pilots from other countries as well.

ye, I find it hard to understand english with that radio sound and the accent. Haven't understand anything frm the pilot though. I was only able to understand the controller:p

^Interesting question you've raised there, went wondering the same myself. My guess is that when foreign pilots fly to China they usually land in the big cities in the east (Beijing, Shanghai etc) and most of the chinese air traffic controllers over there are probably able to speak more English than the pilot in the youtube vid. (and they probably won't let foreign pilots fly to the western, less developed parts of China)

And I've dugged an article from 2005 out about the shortage of air traffic controllers in China, Philippines and India: http://www.frost.com/prod/servlet/market-insight-top.pag?docid=55969220
I've copied a part of the article:

    hmmm. quite interesting.

Most pilots and co-pilots in commerical airlines should have "standard" english response to questions such as these. Except for the heavy accents, then they should be able to communicate.

That is y I don;t think is real ...just a bust on the chinese pilots.
