An “abhorrent” Edmonton man who tortured and sexually abused a four-year-old girl in a so-called “house of horror” should be given up to 15 years in prison.

That’s what’s Crown prosecutor Shelley Bykewich called for this morning during a Court of Queen’s Bench sentencing hearing for Darcy Bannert, 26.

Court has heard the child was sexually assaulted, handcuffed by her feet in a dark basement where marijuana was grown, locked to an iron grate, deprived of liquids and then tortured with a spray bottle.

Bykewich slammed Bannert for choosing “one of the most vulnerable segments of society” as his “target for entertainment” and the “focus of his sexual pleasure” and said a strong message must be sent to the public.

“Darcy Bannert has no one to blame for his actions but himself. He was the player in this game who held all the cards,” said Bykewich. “While (the victim) was merely his puppet for him to play his sadistic games with and satisfy an element of his sexual cravings.”

The prosecutor called it a case of “systematic abuse” and a “reign of terror” and told the judge the only sentencing principles to follow are denunciation and deterrence.

Bannert was earlier convicted of sexual assault, sexual interference, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, common assault, unlawful confinement, uttering threats of bodily harm, possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and proceeds of crime.

His former girlfriend, the mother of the victim, was found guilty of assault for punching and slapping the girl and for causing the child to be in need of protective services.

She was earlier sentenced to a two-year conditional sentence to be served in the community.

Court has heard the girl has been diagnosed as suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and reactive attachment disorder and needs extensive therapy.

In a victim impact statement, read in court today, a social worker detailed the “severe” emotional and psychological effect the abuse has had on the girl, now six.

“(Her) sexual innocence has been taken away and is unable to ever be replaced.”

Court also heard she continues to have behaviour problems, learning difficulties and sometimes acts out sexually with her foster mom and siblings.

However, the child was described as being “resilient” and her support team says there is “hope” for her.

At trial, eyewitnesses testified seeing the girl being handcuffed to a box and made to stand on it, being punched and slapped and being deprived of water.

One witness said the girl was so desperate for something to drink that she once drank a mixture of Miracle-Gro liquid fertilizer and water used for the Christmas tree.

There was also evidence of the girl drinking her own urine, being forced to sit with Bannert on the couch while he watched porn, and dancing “like a stripper.”

Defence submissions are also slated for today.
