    @Angie: The problem was that xinyu mixed Cantonese pinyin with Mandarin pinyin... I can read Mandarin pinyin perfectly well, but I just CBA to bother with Cantonese pinyin. :p

    The problem with cantonese pinyin is that it's not standardized... So I never bother with them, too much effort.

    If someone ask you ~ "do you speck Chinese?"

    Chinese can be spoken:

    * Mandarin 北方话/北方話 or 官話/官话,
    * Wu 吳/吴 , which includes Shanghainese,
    * Cantonese (Yue) 粵/粤,
    * Min 閩/闽, which includes Taiwanese,
    * Xiang 湘,
    * Hakka 客家 or 客,
    * Gan 贛/赣,

    I haven't come across this myself, but I'd hate for people to say that! I'd beat the crap outta him for saying that.

    well taiwanese people think they are their own people and race ethnicity. "no i am not chinese. i am taiwanese"

    that's jsut what i heard =\ probably not all taiwanese peopel do that. but i heard most do. and all my friends do that lol >_<

    It depends, because Chinese is an ethnicity, while Taiwanese is more like a nationality.

    For example: one can be of Chinese descent, but if they grew up somewhere outside of China, he/she may identify him/herself as British/French/American/Canadian/Australian etc. In fact, that kind of reminded me of how a friend of mine can be Polish and Jewish and Canadian at once, because he's Polish descent, of Jewish faith, and of Canadian nationality.

    True that Chinese is an ethnicity and Taiwanese is a nationality. But a lot of people don't understand the difference between ethnicity and nationality.....

    I give a lot of leeway on that... Why get worked up over something unintentional?

    And when I annoy people by saying I am not Chinese but Canadian, it WOULD BE intentional -devil

    I had a debate with some Taiwanese friends when they stated that Taiwanese is an ethnicity. A lot of the hardcore Taiwanese really have that belief.

    I guess there exists the ethnicity as Taiwanese, if you count the natives... -sweat

    most of my friends from southern msia (yes, i am from msia), near singapore all speaks mandarin and cant speak a word of cantonese. When they came up to KL, where most chinese mostly speaks cantonese they feel alienated and didnt even bothered to adapt. Most of the time, they will make fun of the language and says how weird it sounds and stuff. I do feel like slapping them when they do that. Its like they think that speaking cantonese is a weird cult or sumthing ....ZZZZZZ

    OMFG... 2 or 3 weeks ago, a guy, after asking me if I speak mando and me telling him that I speak canto, he said that canto is fugly. I wanted to slap him in the face........ Actually, I think he's taiwanese. One of those taiwanese independants thinking that mando and canto are ugly..... =_=;;;;
