isn't the first one saying that if you reserve your judgement on something, you have hope that it can be what you want it to be? ok that was confusing.

hm. say there is a person. and you think that this person is good, but you don't really know that your judgement is correct, so you don't judge at all, but in your mind, you hold the hope that the person is a good person ...

and I don't know about the second one, isn't there more to the quote?

read the book twice, still hated it.. but i think its something like..

if you don't jump to conclusions and judge people, you have an open mind. so like.. infinite possibilities and what not.

    actually there is.

"If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life..."

my friend explained the 2nd one to me

being someone who your not, with different personalities, that caused so many series in his life
he said it was something like that ^ LOL

anyone know the problem of the storyLOL! i didnt read it :(
i needa find problem & solution.

^trying to do a book report as you're hung over? tsk tsk tsk. haha. :p

the problem of the story? did you read the Overview on Sparknotes? the summary is really accurate and sums everything up. the problem of the story would probably be that Gatsby has geared his entire life to pursuing Daisy and now that he's caught up with Daisy he doesn't quite know what to do. (i.e.: saving up for that iPhone; working endless hours and finally when getting the iPhone, you find it's not what you expected or the mentality is "now i've got it; what do i do with it?")

can you be more specific with the question that your teacher gave you?

"If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life..."

mm.. this is how i translate it to be.. Nick is saying IF "him" (Gastby i presume) delights other people and goes through life pleasing others through "successful gestures", then there was some 'magical aura' about him (do you understand what i'm saying?) i think this quote was when Nick was thinking about Gatsby and the kind of 'untouchable-ness' that he had. i would say tone of admiration. admiration of another person who has a pretty good standing in society (regardless of the rumors that float around) and the fact that Gatsby is a good host and a nice person who doesn't offend.

hope this helps. ask if you need clarification because i know i probably don't sound intact.

    teh question to it is:

Discuss the problem of the story. How does this affect the main character and his/her actions? What would you (the student) do differently from the main character?

What is the solution to the problem? How is the conflict resolved in the story? Is it the ending you expected and explain your answer. If you were to rewrite the ending of the story, what would it be ?

and what does the quote reveal about Nick? o.o

i feel like i'm doing your homework for you :p

read sparknotes overview and you'll understand the story, first of all, and then maybe you'll come up with a conflict :p basically, Gatsby (the main character, i think?), hangs on to this utopian dream that he'll have Daisy as his girl but when it kind of becomes reality he doesn't take into consideration the fact that she has a daughter and a husband and is so driven by his dreams of "getting" her that he goes great lengths for Daisy, even becoming the scapegoat for Myrtle's murder.

"what would you do differently?" --> dude, that's YOUR opinion. form one.

it's all very simple: Gatsby just has to give up Daisy and accept the fact that he's living in the past. again, you can answer most of these questions by simply reading the overview mr. hang over :p

uhh.. which quote? both quotes? first or second one?

well, Nick is very observant to be making such a comment about Gatsby's character. Nick admires Gatsby's ability to be 'blameless' before his guests in the sense that Gatsby does not offend in any way whatsoever. Nick's character is drawn to these 'great' people (if you get my drift? hah. 'scuse me, i know i sound a bit confusing) who seem to have their lives in control. that's as far as my brain gets. lol. if you have any idea whatsoever, share them. maybe our ideas will bounce off each other's.
