I just started using Torrent and BitComet and downloading super slow. I am talking not moving type of slowness. I am currently using Norton antivirus. Could this be the cause of the slowness? If someone could please help me that would be much appreciated. I'm a rookie with all of this so please be patient with me. Thank you!
lol the thing with torrents is that you are getting seeds from multiple users who may or may not be uploading at high kb/s. you also have to take into account you are sharing your download with hundreds/thousands of other people who are all trying to leech from the same seeds. Bittorrent can be insanely slow at times, unless you are downloading from a private tracker, or have a torrent that is being seeded by a thousand + people. Bittorrent often requires a great deal of patience. also most torrents start off slow and then eventually speed up after an hour or more, sometimes u just gotta wait for it lol
I'm gonna go ahead and assume that you haven't forwarded your ports. http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm and why don't you google it. I'm sure you can find a much more in depth torrent tutorial, compared to the advice you'll get here at PA.
Thanks for the info so far everyone. I will Google this as well but the info/advide I am getting from everyone seems to be pretty good so far. Here are the answers to the questions I have been asked: I am dl a series and started about 5.5 hours ago and I am at .1% My connection speed is: 54Mbps (i have no idea what that means) Thanks again for the help!
lol your router might be 54 mbps but i doubt u are running that fast its possible u might have just gotten a crappy torrent with like no seeds. or else u might be semi stuck behind a firewall test your actual speed here http://www.intel.com/ca/personal/digital-life/broadband/index.htm
Thanks fearless_fx i just tested it and it said 764 kb/s for dl and 169 kb/s for ul Still have no idea what all this means? Hopefully i did just unlucky with a crappy link. it was a link from a few months ago. I try another one.
how many seeds/peers are on your connection? if its not that high, then don't expect too much... but i guess just make sure ur ports are forwarded as mentioned before =)
Thanks, i really have no idea what to expect with any of this as i mentioned before it's my first time. I will try something new and see how the speed goes with it. Hopefully it works or I'm buying a new laptop!!!!
well the problems would be to do with the settings, won't be to do the computer. a new laptop probably won't fix it! (and thats an expensive attempt to fix it hahah) just keep trying =) ppl here on pa will do what we can to help
Thanks for the support reno. Yeah, i dont think my wallet would like it too much if i went out and bought another laptop! But the speed is really getting to me. I really want to dl this series and learn how to do all this stuff myself so that i dont have to rely on others to dl it for me. Like you said I just gotta keep trying!
basically u have the same connection speed as me, you should be downloading things at around 175 kb/s max. you probably just got a crappy torrent lol
babs, who is your ISP? some ISP, throttles torrents downloads or even downright ban it, making the torrent horribly sloooow or not running at all. I am in Canada, here Rogers Cable does throttle all torrent traffics. So now I use ADSL from a telephone company.
hey countryboy, i am from canada as well and using ADSL with a telephone company. I am now trying a different thread and getting a dl speed of upto 30 kb/s from what i saw when i woke up. i am going to try tweaking some of my internet settings. i have no idea what i'm doing just guessing that that may help! thanks
Hi Fearless, cool, so now i know what i should be getting a max speed of. Now i am totally determined to achieve that speed somehow! do you think that my Norton is playing a factor in the speed, i saw this morning that i was getting up to about 30 kb/s dl which is better than 2 kb/s which i was at with the previous link that wasnt too good. thanks again! and sorry for being a pest
i normally hardly ever get much more than 50kb/s atleast for all the tvb series anyway but i normally just leave it over night, so i'm not overly fussed too much i've had stuff go on for MONTHS and still not finish... so gave up on that series... annoys u after a while tho... so 30 would be ok, not too bad, but of course can be better =)
THANKS RENO!!!!!!!! Now i know that it isnt just me and that maybe i have a chance at doing this right!!!!!!! EVERYONE AT PA TOTALLY ROCKS!!!!!!!!
lol i never download from torrents i dont know how slow it will be... but when i download from ddl i get 300kbps usually depends on which site i download from though
I know what you mean, Megaupload is what i started with so that's why using Torrent caused me so much grief. I didnt know what to expect!!! Somethings arent available on ddl only Torrent so i figured i should learn. It just means that now there is another person to provide ddl links!!! (as soon as i learn how to do it!)
