I have this delimma, more and more I want to leave my job. But my company is tiny software company, with only two developers and less than ten employees overall. Dont ask how that works. One developer maintains the old stuff and one developer deals with the new stuff (me) It's a very intimate company, meaning we work hand in hand with the customers. We have a basic software which incorporates old stuff and new stuff and then we make customizations to the specific customers. If i left now, no one would know how to do anything from my side. I do all the installs at the customer sites and understand all the new technology. We are going through a wave of new customers, therefore I would be heavily involved with everything. If i leave now, they would but stuck is that a good enough reason not to leave? And if i chose to leave I wont until I have a new job, but i also wont let my work know I'm searching for a new job. So they I couldn't help them find a new employee and to train them. Even if i did do that, my company took a full year to replace me, and they still haven't replaced the other person and that has been a year and a half, so i'm not waiting around for them to find a replacement for me. (I have no signed contract I need to worry about) my boss also guilted me once, saying how they spent all this money and time training me (sending me to school) to learn stuff (it took 9 months). and for what if i leave now, so i could have only used it for the company for a few months? then to leave?
What are your reasons for wanting to leave this company? The wage? The people? No growth? Is it sufficient enough to leave them dangling? Probably the worst thing to do when quitting is burning bridges. I believe you guys should have a proper talk so they're prepared for your departure and you're on your way to a new life.
the wage the lack of consistancy (i never get my paychecks on time) the fact they keep pushing me to do stuff that is not in my job description I am a software engineer, I do not do hardware guy, I am not a business person the fact that my boss is not dependable the fact that my boss makes promises he does not keep to both his employees and to his clients he lies and makes promises about deadlines he throws around many project ideas that are started and are stopped before completion he doesn't follow what's going on in his own company therefore people's scheduled are made so out of synnc because of it i heard he doesn't give pay raises in many years he throws titles around to make the company sound huge, when it's so small All the people around here are more than twice my age, so i feel so out of place, i dont feel comfortable, i dont have a single friend here at work There are some good things about my job becuase the company is small I have so many different things that I do so I learned a lot. Because the company is small, I have my own offce sometimes I can work from home I have flexable hours because the company is small often we have less projects, therefore it's more relaxing because my boss doens't know anything, he doens't realize how simply or hard some of the tasks he gives me are, so he gives me HUGE amounts of time for me to complete them (although lies to the customers and then while trying to think of excuses to tell them later when it comes time too)
I say do it... It's a dog eat dog world out there and you shouldn't let moral obligations keep yourself from expanding. There are plenty of people out there that doesn't care about stuff like that and if you want to compete with them, you have to do one and the same.
sigh, but it realllllly does screw them over, i mean if it just set them back a bit then fine, but this could totally screw all their potiential new clients (i could see my boss lying to them a lot about their intial days of set up being pushed back MONTHS)
In that case, if you want to deal with your conscience...you should at least hint to your boss that you're thinking about leaving and what he'd like to do about it, maybe work out a pay raise or something. Otherwise, you've done your part and you've even thrown in the extra of giving him a heads up.
Are you the only one that knows your boss does this? I don't really see this company succeeding in the long run looking at what you are telling us. What do the other employees think about this? Cause I was thinking the other employees stay there because they probably need the money anyways to support their family. I don't know though.
yea me and the secretary disscuss this all the time (she dispisses him too, but knows she can't quit cause she's 62, who would hire her elsewise) all of the other employees have been here for 10 to 20 years (when the company started) and they can't really leave cause they wouldn't have anywhere else to go no one would hire them at their age and lack of new technological advancements (that's why they hired me) it's like the old folks that just keep working cause they have nothing else to do they know, and they more make fun of his practices one of them is all "gung hoi" for him, because they having been living together for over 10 years
Is it possible to train the older employees to do what you do? I learned about this in my ISDS course in college, and it was basically the process of slowly upgrading everyone from the old to new materials. As you said, they're older so it could take some time. But I'm sure things will turn out better than what they are now.
shit... talk about screwing your company over... itd be funny if they found another person to add to your department, but dont know which position to give them lol
2 weeks notice... the fact that he used all those time n $$ to train u n yet not make u sign a contract doesn't make him sound like a very smart boss to me -whistle
yea he's not he does so much to piss the customers and employees but he's smart enough to make the customers to sign a several hundred thousand dollar contract before he shows that he can't deliver on time
well tbh i don't see this business becoming a sucess due to the lack of organisational skills that ur boss has. my opinion is to tell ur boss about the situation and all the things u don't like him doing currently and threaten to leave if he doesn't change it. if he rele needs u he will change and this will help u and the business bcos making promises about deadlines which u don't keep loses clients at the end of the day. if he doesn't then u can just leave and sign on to a company which is more beneficial to u.
yea he's been running this company for 20 years what he doesn't isn't for the benifit of this company what he does is for the benifit of himself so if it means not servicing the customers just because he wants to go on vacation for two weeks than so be it who am i (a fresh graduate, and not of business) to tell him how to run his business
well u should still threaten to leave thats what i say. u shouldn't be stuck in a job which u don't like as ur young enough to get another job fairly quickly.
I guess I'm just waiting to leave, but trying to figure out a good time and my time line says sometime between 6 to 12 months ~sigh~ i know that's a lone time but still I also have my Work Visa to worry about I dont want to leave too soon, but at the same time, another point was said, if you dont want to feel obligated to stay you better not have them be the one to fill your new working visa cause if you leave right after that, people will be mad! and i will have wasted a lot of money to have to transfer my visa
to screw them over or not, personally i see that as how great or crap of a workplace it is. i guess you just gotta weigh up your options... its nearly xmas, so there'd be end of year (or mid year, however they plan it) reviews? i'd say give it another month ish and discuss the issues with them, and see whether you can get what you want (pay, promotion, etc) at the same time, keep a lookout elsewhere for another job. if after review, your not happy with how the boss is dealing with things, then u just let him know you're going to move on. generally theres a 4 week notice, but if it doesn't say, its upt o you how long u want to give. tho the best thing to do is leave on good terms, u never know that u may go back there to work, u wouldn't wana kill off any opportunities. at the end of the day, while ur still a relatively new grad, the main focus would be to get exposure and learning experiences to move on. if you've gained (or so u believe) all you can from this place, then its definitely time to move on.
hmmm...I thought you are a girl//// Anyway, It seems like you have two problems, work visa, and work environment, right.? your time is running out on the visa?...have him fix it ....eg.get ur boss to renew it...so u can stick around...hehe...this will tell him subtly, he is in trouble if he doesnt keep you or give u some money...leverage point.... the second problem, from what I see in your text, ur are the expert in your company...what u can do after you settle the visa issue, is to set up your own consultant business. you can consult him if he needs help maintaining his contracts of course for $$$$$....so you aint really screwing over....he really is a poor manager if he so heavily rely on one developer for a business...athough, I think everyone is replaceable.... o, yea, done it, seen it....and if he is really a lying creep, then he WILL get out of the jam u leave him with, so dont worry....I say just do it if you have a better opportunity...with that said, better make sure the next opportunity is secure for the next couple of years with growth.... have fun debating the issue....-lol
