Can anyone explain what ToiShan is? From reading above, it seems as if it's a canto dialect.

ok. i was standing at a moderate standpoint until you mentioned 'cantonese' in your uneducated tirade against toishan people. taking an asian american class does not give you a reason to pick at other people's lifestyle.
and plus, mandarin is a dialect fool. you don't go around saying 'i'm mandarin', you're not a language. if your dialect is mandarin, then you're from the mainland.

so next time, before starting a topic, make sure your 'controversial' topic has some sufficient standing before starting it. and you know, by starting this topic, YOU have made 'mandarin' people look bad. good for you.

lol i dont reall know what toishan is but from what everyone has been posting, i assume that cantonesepeople are included inthem. I find this ironic because most hk people i know complain about the same thing about mandarin speakers. and tis also funny because the taiwanese people that you admire talk 2x as much shit about the mainland than the cantonese. FIrst off, why be hating other chinese people just cuz of the language they speak? secondly, you do realize that mainland china has always been poorer on average compared to those people of other provinces

most of my family doesn't like FJs for some reason, no manners, loud etc or something. I personally find no problem with them. (I'm Toishan, but I speak canto though.)

Asian people love to judge and at the same time hate being judged or compared, so yeah we naturally don't like eachother. :D

If anything, blame China for having such a mountanious geography.

every race has someone that makes them look bad. Its just bad apples. There's bound to be an ignorant person messing up everything in every race. Its impossible for the world to be the perfect world we want it to be because there are people who mess up because of their ignorance.

After reading the above, I wish there was a "NO THANKS" button for respondents to press. Note to Gogo, when you finish looking down on people who don't happen to fit into your definition of proper civilization, take the time to listen to what others say about you. Your knowledge of Toishan; its culture, heritage and undeniable contributions to the world and its history is laughably thin as well as self serving. Open your ears and eyes before your mouth; else you'll spend the rest of your life in ignorance.

It is essentially a sub dialect of Cantonese, based on the spoken language from the area of Toi Shan, a suburb of Guang Zhou.

    bbes Incredible

haha gogo123 is a mongi, the reason why the best athletes speak mandarin is bcos china has a much larger population than a region which speaks a certain dialect and besides it covers all districts including the cantonese region and therefore its gonna be able to produce more talent. also how do u know that some of the athletes who speak cantonese are not speaking mandarin so that they can address the majority as cantonese is spoken only in a region whereas mandarin the whole of china.

This looks like a starting of a flame thread. Luckily it didn't turn out to be one.
You can't judge people just by your own personal experience. That is like saying that all stereo types are true, which isn't. People act the way they do based on their judgement, upbrining, and environment. I'm Toishan also called Tai San depending on what language is being spoken. Toi Shan is what people of this language would call it and Tai San is what people who speak Cantonese who call it (Even though i speak both i never knew they were the same thing till my parents told me that they are the same thing)

It's just a dialect of Cantonese which sounds similar to it to a certain extend. It's not hard to understand both if you're use to hearing it alot.

Yeah this could've been a huge flame war. Why'd you have to bump it? :p
