Ihhh...somehow he gives me a feeling like he is a user where he ditches you when he feel like you're in his way and takes you back when he is bored and lonely. Ditch the guy. No point in staying with someone who puts his career before his 4 yrs relationship. If your relationship with him was only couple days to months, its understandable that he wants to move on knowing that you would not be compatible with his ambitions, but for 4 yrs? Could be wrong but he seems to be the type that would go where the grass seems to be greener on the other side. As to whether you should go countdown with him, i dont think it would be a good idea. You should start cutting all ties with him and let him learn his lesson.
